Châteauneuf-de-Randon can be explored through its specific architectural history, granite architecture and connections to Duguesclin. There are also two distinct activity options: a mountain biking (VTT) section of the Grande Traversée du Massif Central (GTMC), which reaches the village and continues on to Laubert, and a hiking route that starts here. Culture and outdoor activities thus provide different focuses for planning your stay.

Church and architectural history

The present-day Église Saint-Étienne was consecrated in 1767. The former Romanesque church was demolished in 1758 because it had fallen into disrepair; nine years separate the demolition and the consecration. This sequence distinguishes the predecessor from the present church building while also recording the reason for its demolition. The walls of the Église Saint-Étienne are faced with granite, and the church also has two side chapels with retables. Retables are altar structures, specifying more precisely what furnishings the chapels contain. The church therefore stands out for both its chronology and its specific architectural details: the granite walls and the altar furnishings in the side chapels.

Tour des Anglais and connections to Duguesclin

The Tour des Anglais is built of granite in medium-sized masonry and retains three floors. It is the surviving remnant of a castle that belonged to the Barony of Randon. Its construction and historical affiliation thus come together: granite, the masonry and the surviving floors describe the building, while its connection to the barony establishes its historical context. Compared with the Église Saint-Étienne, which is notable for its history of consecration and side chapels, the tower foregrounds its masonry, floors and association with the castle.

The Musée Duguesclin was established in the village’s main square and is dedicated to the figure of du Guesclin. It presents du Guesclin and his era through objects, models and images. The Monument commémoratif de Duguesclin in L'Habitarelle has been listed as a historic monument since October 25, 1911. The Monument de Duguesclin consists of a mausoleum open on all four sides, with a recumbent tomb effigy. The Fontaine du Guesclin is also connected with du Guesclin: according to tradition, Bertrand du Guesclin died after drinking its water. The connections to Duguesclin thus take different forms: a themed presentation, memorial architecture and historical tradition.

Mountain biking connection and hiking route

The two named routes can be distinguished by activity and itinerary. The Langogne–Laubert mountain biking connection of the Grande Traversée du Massif Central reaches Châteauneuf-de-Randon and then continues on to Laubert. The La Fontaine Dugesclin hiking route starts in Châteauneuf-de-Randon. One route is therefore described as a connection between named places, while the other starts in the village. Signage and route conditions can change, so check the latest information before setting out. This is particularly useful if one of the routes is an important part of your day’s plans.

Activities in the wider region

In the wider region, the Plateau du Roy in the Margeride offers numerous hiking and mountain biking trails throughout the year. In winter, there are also opportunities for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. This adds a distinct regional focus to Châteauneuf-de-Randon’s cultural and sporting attractions. If you plan to take advantage of the winter activities, check in advance what is currently available.
