Saint-Martin-Lalande lies on a hill above the Fresquel Valley. When planning a visit, the village’s history and walking trails through the hilly landscape take centre stage. The “Panoramas et Patrimoine” route offers views across the Lauragais audois plain; Saint-Martin-Lalande and its church tower can also be seen in the surrounding hills. Other highlights include a lake for carp and trout fishing, a Pietà in the village church, Notre-Dame de Bassens and the Moulin du Vivier. You can give these different themes the emphasis you prefer, without combining them into a fixed day itinerary.

Local History and Heritage

Saint-Martin-Lalande was founded at the beginning of the 12th century. In the 12th century, the Castrum Sancti Martini de Landa was protected by defensive walls. The village’s religious history also forms an important part of its story: in the 12th and 13th centuries, Saint-Martin-Lalande was a significant centre of Catharism. In September 1211, a major battle took place below the village, on the Fresquel. The founding of the village, its fortifications and its later religious significance can be seen as distinct stages in its history. Another period in time is represented in the village church, where a 16th-century Pietà, classified as a cultural heritage object, is on display.

Walking Trails with Different Highlights

The “Panoramas et Patrimoine” walking route, created by Saint-Martin-Lalande and Saint-Papoul, is 10 km long and takes around two and a half hours. Regular yellow markings indicate the route. It offers views across the Lauragais audois plain, with Saint-Martin-Lalande and its church tower visible in the hilly landscape. The route combines a specific distance and approximate duration with expansive views. The red-and-white-marked GR7 offers a there-and-back route to Saint-Martin-Lalande and can be continued as far as the Canal du Midi. While the approximate duration of “Panoramas et Patrimoine” helps with planning your time, the GR7 offers the option of returning or continuing onwards.

Fishing, Local Produce and Other Places to Visit

Catch and release is mandatory when carp fishing at Lac de la Bretonne. Trout fishing is different: the Association de pêche de Saint-Martin-Lalande brings together beginners and experienced anglers. The two activities have different focuses, with catch and release required for carp fishing.

The Moulin du Vivier uses traditional stone milling methods to turn grain supplied by local farmers into flour. The mill shop sells local flour and a range of regional products directly to customers. Here, production and the sale of regional goods go hand in hand. Notre-Dame de Bassens includes a chapel, a replica of the Lourdes grotto and a spring. La Crinière d'Or offers numerous outings for adults and children. So, alongside walking and local history, regional products, a religious site and other excursions are among the different themes to choose from during your stay.
