Saint-Frichoux brings together visible traces of a fortified village, winegrowing and countryside. An old gate, the Tour du château and the Domaine Pujol wine cellar in the village provide clear landmarks; further afield, there are also routes for walking and cycling. When choosing where to stay, it is therefore helpful to distinguish between the village’s history, wine culture and regional activities.

River Landscape, Winegrowing and Routes

The area around Saint-Frichoux has been replanted with vines and a few fruit trees. Saint-Frichoux also lies on the Resclausse, a small river that now flows into the Aude. This combination of cultivated land and river course gives the landscape two concrete points of reference.

The drained Étang de Marseillette covers 2,000 hectares and is shared by Marseillette, Aigues-Vives, Saint-Frichoux and Puichéric. The wider region offers quiet, flat routes for walking and cycling. The GR®78 Camin Romieu long-distance trail runs from Peyriac-Minervois to Saint-Frichoux. There are therefore different walking options: routes in the wider area around the Étang and a long-distance trail with named starting and ending points.

Historic Traces in the Old Village Centre

Remains of the former fortification walls are still visible in Saint-Frichoux. An old gate on Rue de l'Église can also still be seen. The parish church of Saint-Fructueux is a notable part of the commune’s cultural heritage and contributes to its identity. The Tour du château is considered a particularly striking surviving remnant of the old village, which was surrounded by fortifications; it is easy to spot from viewpoints south of the village.

The Portail du château is on Rue du Château, which connects Avenue de l'Europe with Place de la Mairie. The wrought-iron gate has pillars topped by two lion statues.

Place de la République and its fountain are in the heart of the old village centre, between Place de la Mairie, the school and the church of Saint-Fructueux. At the intersection of Rue du Château and Grand'Rue is a calade, probably one of the last surviving medieval paved surfaces.

Wine at Domaine Pujol

The wines of Domaine Pujol in Saint-Frichoux are AOP Minervois wines and can be tasted in a cellar in the village. The estate offers free tastings and direct sales of red, white and rosé wines.

Domaine Pujol holds the HVE3 certification; the 2023 vintage was the estate’s first to carry the organic farming label. These are different certifications. If you are planning a tasting, check the latest visitor information in advance.
