Moux lies between the foothills of Montagne d’Alaric and the Aude Valley and is a wine-growing village. Vineyards, farmland, garrigue, pine forests and hilly terrain shape the landscape. Montagne d’Alaric is 600 metres high. The area lies along the Alaric geological fault; its geological diversity gives rise to a particularly distinctive flora.

Landscape and views

From the summit of Alaric, the 360-degree panorama extends over the plain near Carcassonne, Montagne Noire, the Cévennes, the Mediterranean Sea and the Pyrenees. The trail at Roc de Roland offers another perspective: its panorama encompasses the Corbières, the Lézignan plain and the Minervois. The two descriptions of the views name different landscapes around Moux.

Hiking trails and routes

The GR77 passes through Moux and joins the GR36 at the summit of Alaric. The red-and-white-marked GR®36 long-distance hiking trail also passes through the village. The signposted “Sur les Pas de Roland” hiking route, at 9.3 km long, is another named option. The ridge variant of the trail at Roc de Roland passes Camp Roland, a fortified spur dating from the 4th century BC.

The Sentier Portal starts at Bories Vieilles and follows the old road to Lagrasse, as well as the historic boundary stones of the Devèze from the former seigneurial regime. It passes through Mediterranean undergrowth with strawberry trees. This trail therefore brings a historical trace together with specifically described vegetation.

Two loop routes are also described by distance: a 6 km loop runs along the slope near Camplong on a mountain biking trail. Another, 10 km loop leads to the Signal and descends via the GR77. The Chemin Vert de Puichéric à Caunes-Minervois was created on the former “Moux/Caunes-Minervois” railway line and connects six villages between the plain and the foothills. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Heritage, literature and wine

The historic baptismal font, previously used as a pedestal for the cross in the square, was returned to Moux church in 2015. Château de Saint-Pierre is documented in writing from 1036 and was owned by the Alarico lords. A siege by Simon de Montfort is attributed to the château, though this is uncertain; it was presumably destroyed after its fall.

Jean Lebrau is buried in Moux cemetery. He became the poet of Montagne d’Alaric, the vineyards and Corbières wine. A grave in Moux also features a reproduction created by the animal sculptor Pompon, titled “Le Transi de René de Chalon,” accompanied by a poem.

Château Mansenoble is a Corbières wine producer in Moux; its plots lie at the foot of Alaric. Both wine-growing and the landscape around Alaric are therefore among the specific themes that shape the village.
