Espéraza brings together craftsmanship, the history of the Earth and trails, each with its own distinct focus. At the Musée de la Chapellerie, the making of wool-felt hats is traced from the felt hood to the finished hat. Dinosauria is devoted to dinosaurs and their contemporaries; the Sentier des Dinosaures follows the Aude River to the Bellevue fossil site. Other highlights include the three-arched Pont Vieux and trails with historic links and viewpoints.

Craftsmanship and the History of the Earth

The Musée de la Chapellerie d’Espéraza displays machinery and various pieces of equipment used to make hats from wool felt. The production process shown runs from the felt hood to the finished hat. The focus is therefore not only on the finished product, but also on the steps involved in making it. Two workshop areas explain hatmaking and the impact of mechanical advances since the Industrial Revolution. This brings together a specific manufacturing process and the technological changes it has undergone—a focus for travellers interested in craftsmanship and the history of technology.

Dinosauria in Espéraza is the first museum in France devoted entirely to dinosaurs and their contemporaries. With more than 2,000 m² of exhibition space, the museum explores the major geological eras. Its scope therefore extends beyond dinosaurs as a standalone subject to include their contemporaries and broader periods in the history of the Earth. Dinosauria has free parking, and there is a bus stop directly outside the museum. You can take both of these details into account when choosing how to get there.

Architectural History and Monuments

The Pont Vieux spans the Aude with three arches and is listed as an additional historic monument. According to the municipal historical description, the bridge has survived every flood and is considered the oldest bridge in the upper Aude Valley after the bridge at Alet. Its construction, connection to the river and historical significance make it a notable point of reference in the town’s architectural history.

A church in Espéraza is also listed as a historic monument. Together, the bridge and church offer two points of interest if you want to explore the town through its buildings as well as its museums and trails.

Two Routes, Different Highlights

The Sentier des Dinosaures is an easy 8 km route that starts and finishes in Espéraza. It follows the Aude River before continuing to the Bellevue dinosaur fossil site; 15 information panels provide context along the route. Its length, start and end points, and named destination offer practical details for planning your day. Unlike a visit to Dinosauria, the route takes the dinosaur theme out of the exhibition space and along the river to the fossil site.

The Sentier de Couleurs offers a different focus. It follows historic trails to Rennes-le-Château; from Tour Magdala, you can enjoy views of the valley and the small canyon carved by the Couleurs stream. The two routes therefore have different points of interest: the Sentier des Dinosaures focuses on the river and the dinosaur fossil site, while the Sentier de Couleurs features historic trails and scenic views.
