The Canal du Midi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, crosses the area of Caux-Et-Sauzens and runs around the hamlet of Sauzens. Together with hiking trails through vineyards, fields, and pine and oak forests, the landscape, outdoor activities, and heritage shape the character of a stay.

Discover the landscape on foot and by bike

The Sentier Vignes, Pinèdes et Canal du Midi is a hiking trail around the village of Caux-Et-Sauzens. It starts in the village square and is marked with yellow signs. Along the route, paths pass through vineyards and fields interspersed with pine and oak forests. This means hikes take in both open spaces and forest sections.

The Écluse de Villesèque offers a different perspective: this single-chamber lock is on the Canal du Midi in the commune of Caux-Et-Sauzens, close to Villesèquelande. A tourist cycling route leads from the lock to Caux-Et-Sauzens. For 2025–2026, the cycling time is listed as 35 minutes. This time refers to the cycling route; the Sentier Vignes, Pinèdes et Canal du Midi, by contrast, is the hiking trail around the village.

Architectural history and heritage

The present-day Église Saint Étienne, Saint Sébastien de Caux dates from the 14th century. Its bell tower is 18 metres high. An arrow slit is still visible on the façade. The church also features a Romanesque round arch. These architectural details make the church a notable point of interest for anyone interested in the architectural history of the area.

The Château de Sauzens also reflects different historical periods: its oldest section may date from the 12th century. Two 14th-century windows with horizontal central mullions remain on the east façade. The cautious dating of the oldest section is important; the windows, however, are dated to the 14th century.

The Église Saint André de Sauzens dates from the 12th and 13th centuries. It is privately owned and is currently closed to the public for safety reasons. Three public gardens add to a visit to Caux-Et-Sauzens. The history of the Château de Caux is another point of interest: it formed part of the village’s fortifications. Its defensive structures included three round towers with arrow slits, linked by curtain walls.

Wine tasting at the Château de Caux

The Château de Caux offers wine tastings throughout the year, as well as tours of the vineyard and the wine cellar where the wine is made. The guided tastings feature locally produced white, rosé, and red wines. Seasonal details may change. The wine offering adds another focus for your stay alongside hiking and cultural attractions.
