Saint-Ouen-en-Brie combines a long hiking route with distinctive cultural and landscape features. The Contreforts de la forêt de Villefermoy trail, Saint-Ouen Church and two sinkholes in the meadows each offer something different. This contrast is useful for planning: you can make the hike your main activity or focus on the church’s architecture and the landscape.

Hiking and Getting There

The Contreforts de la forĂŞt de Villefermoy hiking trail is 23 km long, with a stated duration of 5 hours and 45 minutes. Plan it as a separate, longer outing. A route leaflet, updated in April 2018, names Saint-Ouen-en-Brie town hall as the starting point. From there, the trail leads into the Villefermoy Forest, an area designated as a Natura 2000 site. This designation gives the forest protected-area status in addition to its relevance for route planning.

Published route measurements may differ from later trail markings; also check local trail conditions before setting out. For the journey from Melun, the route leaflet updated in April 2018 gives the D408. The starting point and the journey there are two separate planning details: the town hall marks the start of the hiking trail, while the D408 is the road connection from Melun. Check current information when planning your journey.

Church and Heritage

Saint-Ouen-en-Brie Church consists of a rectangular choir, a nave and a bell tower. In church architecture, the nave is the main space and the choir is the liturgical area; for this church, the choir’s rectangular shape is specifically noted. Together with the bell tower, these features give the church a clear architectural layout. This provides a distinct architectural focus in addition to the hiking route.

Saint-Ouen Church houses a carved and painted wooden statue of Saint Barthélémy dating from the 17th century. It is listed as a protected object; the listing was updated in 2026. The church building and the statue offer different perspectives on the heritage: one is about the building’s layout, the other about a single work of art with specified material, treatment and century.

Meadow Landscape and Walking Promenade

There are two sinkholes in the meadows of Saint-Ouen, where large quantities of water flow in and disappear. View them only from safe public places. The way the water behaves makes the sinkholes a distinctive landscape feature alongside the forest and hiking trail.

A park in Saint-Ouen-en-Brie is laid out as a walking promenade. This offers a different kind of walk from the 23 km route: the hiking trail has a stated distance and duration, while the park is designed as a promenade for strolling. When planning your day, you can choose between a longer hike and a walk in the park.
