Between forest, the Marne and village history, Germigny-l'Évêque offers several distinct reasons to plan your stay around your personal interests. These include a hiking trail through the Forêt domaniale de Montceaux, routes along the riverbank and historic buildings in the village. A bus connection and tennis and padel facilities add practical considerations to the options available.
Forest in the Montceaux Massif
The communal forest of Germigny-l'Évêque covers 20.45 hectares and is part of the large Montceaux forest massif. The forest areas of Germigny consist of 90 percent deciduous woodland; native oaks make up 74 percent of the trees.
A 13-kilometre hiking trail through the Forêt domaniale de Montceaux starts in Germigny-l'Évêque; it is described as a very easy hike. The route length and difficulty rating are two separate pieces of planning information. The “Tour en forêt et bord de Marne” circular route offers a different perspective on the forest: it follows small paths between dry birch woods and natural stretches of the Marne riverbank. Conditions may vary depending on the season.
Routes along the Marne
The “Marne and Canal in Varreddes” hiking route follows the riverbank, passing beneath the remains of the old bridge before reaching the square in Germigny-l'Évêque. The “Balade au fil de la Marne et nature luxuriante” route runs along the Marne and past the Forêt domaniale des Montceaux. The points of interest described therefore differ: the first route includes the village square and bridge remains, while the other features the Marne and the forest. Recreational boating offers another way to discover Germigny-l'Évêque from the Marne.
Church, pleasure house and gardens
The present-day village church was built in 1661 after the earlier church was demolished. A relic of Saint Faron is displayed to the left of the altar in the village church. Part of Baron Ménager's former pleasure house has been listed in the register of Monuments historiques since 2015. The gardens of the Terrasses de Germigny also bring landscape and architecture together: they are laid out on terraces overlooking the Marne and around a small 18th-century château. The dates refer to different things: 1661 marks the construction of the present-day church, the 18th century dates the château, and 2015 is the year the part of the pleasure house was listed.
