Le Deschaux marks the beginning of the Bresse Jurassienne. Two described walks focus on different things: a 10 km route through the Bresse comtoise and its ponds, and a 4 km route along the Orain. Local history and Faigny Pond add further topics to consider when planning a trip.

Local History and Past Traditions

After 1700, today’s town center developed along the royal road, now the Dole–Lons route. Another historic landmark is the site of today’s château: it was once home to a building called the Tour de Lioutre, which served the Chissey family as a hunting rendezvous. The road and hunting rendezvous illustrate two historical facets of the town.

The former village fruitière tells the story of local dairy production. Farmers supplied cow’s milk, which was processed there into Comté cheese, cream, butter and other products. The more recent history of local events also has a specific date: in 2026, the former association La Fruitière was renamed Desch’o Festif. La Fruitière had previously organized, among other things, the village flower festival and flea market.

Faigny Pond: Facilities and Fishing

At Faigny Pond, also called Février, there are tables, benches, barbecue areas and a parking lot. As facilities may change through local maintenance, check their condition before your visit. In 2010, the pond was made accessible for recreational fishing following the necessary work. If you plan to fish there, check the local fishing regulations in advance; they may change.

Two Walks with Different Focuses

A route description published on December 1, 2019, outlines a 10 km walk, described as straightforward, through the Bresse comtoise and its ponds. The walk offers a lovely view of the large Étang Billedon and starts at the parking lot by Le Deschaux church.

The description of the Val d’Orain route was published on January 14, 2018. The route is 4 km long and follows the Orain River, the edge of the forest and the meadows, crossing the shallow Veuge ford. When water levels are high, you may need to take off your shoes. On the way back, it passes the château park and an avenue lined with plane trees before returning to Le Deschaux. The description gives the parking lot opposite the church as the starting point.

By comparison, Val d’Orain is 6 km shorter and follows the Orain, crossing the shallow ford; the 10 km walk focuses on ponds and the view of Étang Billedon. Check trail conditions and access locally before setting out on either route; maintenance or high water may affect Val d’Orain.
