Jouhe offers two specific starting points for planning a trip: Église Saint-Pierre in the village and hiking trails to Mont-Roland Sanctuary. The church brings together architectural elements from different periods; the sanctuary adds a history of pilgrimage, a votive chapel and hiking trails. When looking for accommodation, you can first decide whether local history or hiking will be the main focus. The destinations mentioned remain distinct: trails lead from Jouhe to the sanctuary, while a designated hiking trail starts in Sampans.

Church and History in Jouhe

The nave of Église Saint-Pierre dates from 1749, while the choir dates from the 16th century. Its furnishings include wooden sculptures, paintings and a reliquary. The church also houses a copy of a statue of the Virgin and Child, dated to around 1150. These different dates give the church a distinctive historical character: they can be linked to specific architectural features and furnishings, rather than just a single date for the entire building.

A statue of the enthroned Virgin Mary from Mont-Roland is described as the first known Marian image in the Jura. The people of Jouhe brought the statue to their village; it is still kept in Église Saint-Pierre. You can visit the church by making a simple request. Confirm the local arrangements before your visit.

There is also a historical landmark beside the village square: the tower of the old castle, which dates to the 14th century. A papal bull from 1089 mentions the church at Mont-Roland, which was then entrusted to the Benedictines of the priory of Jouhe. Together, the two sites offer glimpses into different chapters of history: the village’s architectural heritage and its early connection with the sanctuary.

Mont-Roland and Its Hiking Trails

Notre-Dame de Mont-Roland is a pilgrimage sanctuary. It includes a church and a votive chapel, and is also located on a route of the Way of St James. From the sanctuary, views extend over the Forêt de Chaux and the Saône plain. This combination of a religious site, history and landscape offers a different focus from the architectural history of Église Saint-Pierre.

Two described routes are easy to distinguish when planning a hike. The “Le Mont Roland” trail leads from Sampans to the sanctuary in Jouhe, is 7.32 kilometres long and is rated easy. “Les Monts Dolois” starts and ends in Jouhe and is 9 kilometres long. This gives you a choice of different starting points and destinations: a route from Sampans to the sanctuary, or one that starts and finishes in Jouhe. The stated distances and ratings also differ; no easy rating is given for “Les Monts Dolois.” Other hiking trails lead from Jouhe to the sanctuary, and several trails start at the sanctuary itself. Route details and trail conditions may change if a route is altered; check the latest route description before setting out.

At the foot of the sanctuary is the Résurgence de la Foulotière, a well-hidden spring. The basin and foundations at the spring point to a former mill that has fallen into ruin. This is a distinct landscape feature alongside the views of the forest and plain: here, the spring and traces of past use shape the site, while the views open up the surrounding landscape.

When choosing accommodation in Jouhe, it helps to consider these highlights separately. Église Saint-Pierre and the tower of the old castle are suited to sightseeing and exploring local history; the hiking trails offer different starting points, destinations and distances. If you are mainly planning a hike, you can first decide whether to walk from Sampans to the sanctuary or choose a route that starts and ends in Jouhe. If cultural history is your main interest, the church, the statue of the Virgin Mary and the historic connection with Mont-Roland are specific topics to explore during your stay.
