Suran, walks and active routes

The Suran offers a way to explore Florentia through a specific landscape experience: on the route from Florentia to Liconnas, you can follow the river as it winds gently in meanders along the valley floor. The bucolic surroundings invite you to walk and linger. If you like to combine a trip with peaceful moments outdoors, you can make this stretch of river a focus of your visit. It offers a different kind of experience from a sporting outing: here, the emphasis is on walking along the river and spending time in the landscape.

There are two different routes to choose from for a more active outing. The “Florentia VTT n°2” is an easy, 24-kilometre mountain biking route around Florentia. The “Florentia CAP n°2” is a moderate, 17-kilometre running route, also around Florentia. The difference is therefore not just the distance: these are different activities, and each route has its own difficulty rating. The seven-kilometre difference is not, in itself, a direct measure of which outing is more strenuous. If you are choosing between the two, first consider whether you are planning a bike ride or a running route; you can then interpret each rating in the appropriate context. Check current conditions and route availability before setting out.

Hamlets and finding accommodation

Florentia consists of three hamlets: Les Babeys, Les Ravaux and the Quartier d'en Bas. When looking for a holiday rental, you can start by choosing Florentia as your destination and use the hamlet names as additional points of reference. This lets you distinguish the destination as a whole from a more specific location before choosing a particular listing.

Historic references and the Chapelle de la Balme d'Epy

The place names also give Florentia a historical context. The part of Sacrinia known as “en Chagrigna” is now in the municipality of Florentia. Sacrinia lay between Florentia and La Balme-d'Épy. It is important to distinguish between the present and the past: the reference to en Chagrigna describes its current location, while the description of Sacrinia’s location is a historical statement. Those interested in the landscape’s place names will find two distinct but connected points of reference here.

The Chapelle de la Balme d'Epy lies outside the built-up area of Florentia. It stands at the point where an underground stream resurfaces, and is a pleasant spot for picnics and relaxing. A pilgrimage is held there every year on 15 August. If you want to include this tradition in your travel plans, 15 August is a fixed annual date to keep in mind; if you are mainly interested in the landscape, you can locate the chapel by the spot where the stream resurfaces.
