Vernois Sur Mance combines village history with a natural area that extends beyond the commune. The 18th-century church, fountains and ancient lime trees each give the village its own character; the Mance Valley, its hillsides and the named streams offer a broader landscape perspective. This gives your trip planning two focal points: historic features in the village and wider natural themes around the valley and waterways.

Village History Between the Church and the Lime Trees

The village church in Vernois Sur Mance dates from the 18th century and has furnishings from the same period. Two lime trees several hundred years old stand in front of the church. The church and trees offer distinct historical points of reference: the furnishings date from the 18th-century construction period, while the trees, with their age, represent a much longer span of time. Anyone interested in local history can appreciate both as built and living features.

Fountains as Distinctive Features of the Village

The fountains also contribute distinctive details to the village scene. The round fountain carries water and has a niche in an antique-inspired style. Antique-inspired describes a design that draws on forms from antiquity. There are three other fountains in the village, adorned with flowers whose appearance may vary by season. An antique-inspired niche and floral decoration thus stand side by side as distinct design features. A description from July 2022 also mentions a fountain washhouse in the heart of the village. This adds a distinct type of water-related building to the theme of fountains. An event at the fountain in Vernois-sur-Mance was scheduled for Friday, April 12, 2019, as part of the Cie MuchMuche residency.

The Mance Valley and Its Natural Environment

Vernois Sur Mance lies on the valley floor of the Mance and is surrounded by hillsides. The ZNIEFF “Vallée de la Mance vers Vernois-sur-Mance, ruisseaux des Roises et de la Perche,” updated on February 10, 2015, covers several communes, including Vernois-sur-Mance. The area includes floodplain meadows and riverside vegetation along the Mance. The Roises and Perche are tributaries of the Mance. Both streams have been protected since April 13, 2007, under a prefectural biotope-protection order to protect the white-clawed crayfish and brown trout. For nature enthusiasts, two scales of protection are therefore relevant: a habitat spanning several communes and the protection of specific species in the tributaries.

Communal Forest and a Designated Walking Trail

Vernois Sur Mance has 100 hectares of communal forest. The Sentier pédestre des Croix walking trail is designated in Vernois-sur-Mance; the 2018 ONF forest map places it in the communal forest. The trail offers a distinct connection to the wooded surroundings, while the ZNIEFF describes a landscape and waterway area shared by several communes. Check trail conditions locally before planning to walk it.
