Filain offers several different reasons to visit: architectural history at the Château de Filain and the Petit Château, mountain-view trails and dry grasslands where wild orchids grow, as well as a landscaped spot to pause in the village centre. La Guiguite en Folie adds its own range of games and leisure activities. When planning your visit, you can first distinguish between cultural and landscape experiences and a visit focused on games and activities.
The château and its architectural history
The Château de Filain was classified as a historic monument by decree on 20 April 1944. It has four round towers and was extended with a Renaissance wing in the 16th century. This wing includes two square towers, characteristic of the style of Henry IV. The round and square towers give the description its contrasting forms, while the Renaissance wing dates from the 16th century.
The Petit Château is a fortified residence built in the 16th century and completely remodelled in the 18th century. The dates tell different stories: the Château de Filain is distinguished by a 16th-century Renaissance wing, while the Petit Château’s history also includes its remodelling in the 18th century.
On 20 April 2023, the Château de Filain was closed to visitors. If you are planning a visit, check access before travelling.
The village centre and Tilleul de Sully
The Source de la Filaine is in the village centre. Its renovated stone surrounds and landscaped area invite you to stop and take a quiet break. Alongside the towers and their architectural history, this is also a place to pause peacefully in the village.
The Tilleul de Sully is said to be a 400-year-old lime tree; its planting is attributed to the time of Sully. It offers a historical connection through a tree, while the château stands out above all for its architecture.
Trails and landscape
The trails towards Les Monnins and Les Goichots offer open views of the surrounding mountains and access to dry grasslands where wild orchids grow. Here, the focus is on expansive mountain views and distinctive plant life. Vegetation and trail conditions can vary by season. If you are particularly interested in the orchids, take these changing conditions into account when planning your visit.
Games and leisure activities
La Guiguite en Folie offers more than 800 m² of indoor play areas, as well as mini golf, a tropical farm, pedal go-kart tracks, animals and play areas. This makes it different from the architectural history and landscape trails: here, a wide range of games and leisure activities come together. The programme may change, so check the current offer before travelling.
Plan your visit around your interests
To decide what part Filain should play in your trip, consider its different highlights: explore architectural history at two fortified residences, follow trails to mountain views and dry grasslands, or enjoy the range of games at La Guiguite en Folie. If you plan to visit the Château, check access in advance; seasonal vegetation and changing conditions may also affect your plans for the trails. This way, you can shape your visit around the things that interest you most.
