The parish church of Saint-Pierre and Saint-Paul, a former fortified house and the Maison dite Château give Cult several distinct points of architectural and historical interest. The Puits Jacob adds a named well with a shaft about ten metres deep. If you are choosing a destination for a culturally focused stay, these specific features can help you get a sense of Cult.
A church built in several phases
Different building phases can be distinguished at the parish church of Saint-Pierre and Saint-Paul: the choir dates from the 16th century, the bell tower from the 18th century, and the nave was rebuilt in the 19th century. The dates therefore refer to different parts of the building. The floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross and includes a nave. The church features barrel vaults and groin vaults: one extends a curved ceiling lengthwise through the space, while the other has curved surfaces meeting along groins. The oratory houses a 16th-century statue of the Virgin and Child.
The fortified house and Maison dite Château
The former fortified house was converted into a municipal administration building in 1878. Most of its quadrangular perimeter wall has survived, as have two square towers with loopholes. Other surviving features include a staircase with flights running in opposite directions, mullioned windows and monumental fireplaces. This makes it possible to consider the defensive perimeter wall and other architectural details of the house separately.
At the Maison dite Château, the dates 1611 and 1618 stand out on the eastern window openings. The building also has a stair tower with a spiral staircase and several loopholes. The residential wing was listed by decree of 18 September 1998. The dates refer to different things: 1611 and 1618 appear on the window openings, while the decree concerns the residential wing.
Puits Jacob and the D67
The Puits Jacob is a named well in Cult; beneath it is a shaft about ten metres deep. This approximate depth gives the well a specific structural feature in addition to its name.
For getting around by road, the D67 is a useful reference point: Cult lies on this road, which via Marnay forms the transport route between Gray and Besançon.
Mushrooms by appointment in Bonboillon
If you would also like to include Bonboillon in your travel plans, Le Champicultois sells pholiotas, several varieties of oyster mushrooms and lion’s mane directly to private customers there. Sales are by appointment. So arrange a time and confirm the visiting arrangements in advance. Bonboillon is a separate destination in your plans.
When choosing where to stay, you can assess Cult in light of the subjects that interest you: church architecture and historic building features sit alongside the Puits Jacob and the D67 as a point of reference. This gives you a concrete basis for matching Cult to your own travel interests before deciding on accommodation.
