For a trip to Métabief, winter sports, the landscape around Mont d’Or and the history of the town are three specific points of interest. The resort, a mountain biking circuit, a trail to the summit of Mont-d’Or and cultural sites appeal to different interests. When choosing accommodation, it helps to first decide whether your focus will be on the slopes, outdoor activities or culture.

Winter Sports and Trails

The Métabief resort has 26 kilometres of ski slopes, two beginner areas and a freestyle area; winter sports include alpine skiing, snowboarding and freestyle. For another active option, the easy Mont Ramey No. 3 mountain biking circuit covers 9.3 kilometres. The stated duration is one hour, with 209 metres of ascent and 210 metres of descent. The start and finish are at Place Xavier Authier in Métabief. For planning the ride, consider the duration and elevation profile together: a one-hour circuit, with almost equal elevation gain and loss.

Culture and Local History

The Espace découverte du Mont d’Or is a wooden gallery with exhibitions about life and the history of the Mont-d’Or massif, the surrounding mountains and their environment. Through a glass window, visitors can watch snow cannons and snow machines, which supply snow to 40 percent of the Métabief ski area in winter.

The Musée de la Meunerie de Métabief is a water-powered technical structure dating from the 13th century, later altered over the course of history. During a guided tour lasting about one hour and 15 minutes, well-preserved exhibits illustrate traditional crafts. Compared with the one-hour Mont Ramey circuit, the tour is about 15 minutes longer; in terms of content, it contrasts technical history and mountain biking.

The Usine communale is partially protected as a French historic monument. The French Ministry of Culture entry was updated on 4 March 2026. The town also has a connection to sporting history: Métabief is described as the birthplace of mountain biking in the Doubs département; the 1993 World Championships are part of the town’s history.

Landscape and Orientation

The circular trail to Mont d’Or leads to the summit and offers views of the Doubs Valley, the Alps and Mont Blanc. There are areas along the Mont Ramey No. 3 circuit that require particular care to protect their natural environment. In connection with the route, the Massif du Mont d’Or, du Noirmont et du Risol is designated a Natura 2000 site. Before setting out, check local trail information, route conditions and access rules; route specifications may change.

Métabief Aventures is also for children and adults; the leisure park is located in a fir forest in the Jura.
