Discover Zalana through its very different local settings: narrow, vaulted lanes with old fountains, the Baroque parish church of A Nunziata, a washhouse overlooking the Bravone Valley and the Genoese Pont d’Alisu. The village brings together heritage and nature-focused walks. If you’d like to explore architecture, sacred art and scenery during your getaway, Zalana offers several distinct highlights.

Village Lanes, Fountains and Strambelaccie

Zalana’s lanes are narrow, vaulted and lined with stone; old fountains punctuate the paths through the village. This sequence draws attention not only to individual buildings, but also to the shape of the lanes and the water sources. A short, stone-paved path leads to the Strambelaccie fountain and its well-preserved washhouse. From the hamlet of Belfasca, you can reach the washhouse via the path opposite the parish church. From there, the view stretches across the two villages of Campi and Moïta and the Bravone Valley. This destination brings together a preserved structure and sweeping views of the villages and valley.

Baroque Parish Church and Religious Art

The parish church of A Nunziata de Zalana was built in the Baroque style at the end of the 18th century and is dedicated to the Annunciation. Inside are numerous statues, including depictions of Saint Anthony, Saint Lucia and Saint Roch. Its construction period and dedication provide historical and religious context for the church, while the figures give a sense of its furnishings. The parish church also houses the painting “The Beheading of John the Baptist” from the Fesch Collection, which is classified as a Historic Monument.

Pont d’Alisu and the Sentier de Zalana

The Genoese bridge Pont d’Alisu lies on the Bravone River and is a highlight along the Matra-Zalana route. Here, the bridge’s construction and riverside setting take centre stage, offering a different heritage focus from the parish church’s furnishings. The Sentier de Zalana is described as a family hike. Along this walking trail, you can experience lush nature in a striking landscape; vegetation and trail conditions may vary depending on the season. The two outings offer different highlights: a Genoese structure on the Bravone or a nature-focused walk along the Sentier.

Vignale: Landscape and Dry-Stone Heritage

Vignale, a hamlet of Zalana, brings together landscape and dry-stone heritage. Macchia, woodland and ferns surround former vegetable gardens. Examples of dry-stone construction include a calade—a stone-paved path—and very fine retaining walls. The former gardens reflect how the land was used, while the calade and walls are tangible building features. For travellers who want to experience the landscape through traces of human activity, Vignale offers a different focus from the view at the washhouse or the Genoese bridge.
