Valle-di-Rostino invites you to discover its history through routes, buildings and landscapes. The Sentier du Patrimoine follows a former connection between the hamlet of Valle and Ponte Novu; the Strada Paolina is a cycling loop that climbs to panoramic views. Other sights include a washhouse, a chapel, archaeological remains and the ruins of a mill. You can plan your stay around what interests you most: historical traces or a road loop.

The Sentier du Patrimoine and Village History

The Sentier du Patrimoine follows the historic path that connected the hamlet of Valle with Ponte Novu. The route itself is therefore part of the area’s cultural story. Along the way, the path includes one of the few surviving sections of Valle’s water supply system. The village washhouse is also on the Sentier. The village women used to meet there, and it remained in use until the 1960s. The water supply and the washhouse represent two aspects of life in the village in the past: providing water for the settlement and offering a shared meeting place. This combination makes the path particularly interesting for travelers who want to understand not only the buildings, but also their former functions and social use.

Chapel, Sanctuary and Mill

The Chapelle Saint-Sylvestre de Grate was built in 1664 and now stands in the center of the hamlet of Grate, at an altitude of 690 m on a rocky outcrop. By contrast, the archaeological site and the foundations of an original sanctuary in Valle-di-Rostino were designated a historic monument by decree on 15 May 1991. The distinction is clear: the chapel is notable for its date of construction and location, while the sanctuary is distinguished by its archaeological remains and protected status.

The Lavatoghju mill adds evidence of former production to the historic sites. Its ruins include a water tower and two partly buried millstones; the mill was used to grind chestnuts. The area’s heritage thus ranges from religious and archaeological remains to a record of a specific former milling activity.

Valley Views and Cycling Route

U Castellu a A Scolca focuses on the landscape: it stands on a rocky outcrop and offers an unobstructed view across the entire valley. This valley panorama provides a scenic counterpoint to the individual buildings and historical traces.

For cyclists, the Strada Paolina is another concrete option. The cycling loop climbs in the direction of Valle di Rustinu (Valle-di-Rostino), with panoramic views along the ascents. The route uses roads only; some are narrow, but all are passable. As road conditions can change, check local conditions before setting out. This is what distinguishes the loop from the Sentier du Patrimoine: on the loop, the roads, climbs and views shape your choice; on the Sentier, the focus is on the historic path and its heritage.
