The village lies on a promontory 860 metres above sea level; Monte Cardo rises to the west, reaching a summit of 2,453 metres. Other highlights include Chapelle Sant’Eliseu and the historic Petra Furnella quarry. The focus thus ranges from mountain landscapes to religious and industrial heritage.
Elevation and landscape
Chapelle Sant’Eliseu lies at an elevation of 1,555 metres. This is 695 metres above the village; the summit of Monte Cardo rises a further 898 metres above the chapel. This places the promontory, chapel and mountain summit at distinct elevations. Santo-Pietro-Di-Venaco is also part of the Natura 2000 site FR9400578 Massif du Rotondo. The elevations and the site designation offer two different points of reference for the landscape: the locations of individual places and the regionally designated natural area.
Routes and directions
The Boucle Sant’Eliseu et Bergeries starts in Santo-Pietro-Di-Venaco. The starting point is in the car park above the washhouse behind the church. From the starting point in the village, the route follows yellow markers towards Chapelle Sant’Eliseu; further along, in the eastern section, it is marked orange. As trail markings and parking conditions may change, check both before setting out. This gives you a specific starting point, the stated direction and the trail-marking colours to bear in mind when planning.
The Andatu Pasturecciu shepherds’ trail has a different focus: it allows you to explore Santo-Pietro-Di-Venaco’s agro-pastoral past. The two trails therefore differ in what they offer. The Boucle focuses on the marked route and direction towards the chapel, while the Andatu focuses on the history of agro-pastoral land use. If you want to choose based on the theme, this distinction offers a practical way to decide.
Quarry and chapel
Petra Furnella brings the area’s industrial history into view. The quarry extracted blue Turquin marble and regularly produced slabs, skirting boards and paving stones, primarily for export. The three-tiered quarry face is still visible. Alongside the extracted material, the products made from it and their export focus also stand out.
Chapelle Sant’Eliseu represents a different aspect of the area’s culture: it contains wooden statues of Saint Elisée and Saint Sabine. Together with its elevation, it is a specific religious landmark alongside the quarry’s history and the shepherds’ trail’s agro-pastoral theme.
If you are considering Santo-Pietro-Di-Venaco as a destination for your stay, you can weigh up its landscape and cultural themes. The promontory, Monte Cardo and Natura 2000 site shape the landscape aspect; the chapel, quarry and shepherds’ trail offer different points of historical interest.
