Corte combines cultural attractions with hiking opportunities in the Restonica and Tavignanu valleys. The Citadelle de Corte is the only one of Corsica’s seven citadels built inland. Its location sets it apart from the other citadels. This provides a clear thematic framework for planning your trip: Corte’s cultural history can be complemented by two distinct landscapes and hiking areas.

Citadel and Musée de la Corse

The Citadelle de Corte has been open to the public since 1984; current access conditions may vary seasonally. The outdoor visitor route runs along the ramparts and includes stops featuring augmented reality applications. The installations may be updated. The visit thus combines an outdoor route with digital interpretation stops. If you plan to visit the Citadel during a specific period, check the access conditions in advance.

The Musée de la Corse opened in June 1997 to house the ethnographic collection assembled by Père Louis Doazan on behalf of the Musée national des Arts et Traditions populaires. The museum has two permanent galleries and areas for temporary exhibitions. It therefore combines a clearly defined institutional origin with permanent galleries and changing exhibition spaces. For your cultural itinerary, it offers a different focus from the Citadel: here, the collection and exhibition layout take center stage.

Sacred and civic architectural history

The Église de l'Annonciation was built in 1459 by Monseigneur Ambroise Arrighi d'Omessa, Bishop of Aleria. As a place of worship, it provides a dated point of reference in the town’s history. The Palazzu Naziunale is the only surviving example of Genoese civic architecture in Corte. It therefore represents a different historical perspective from the church: its classification is shaped not by a single year of construction, but by Genoese civic architecture. If you organize cultural sites by theme, the religious building and civic architecture offer two different perspectives on the town’s history.

Hiking trails in Restonica and Tavignanu

The Restonica Valley is classified as a Grand Site de France. More than 30 kilometers of new hiking trails of all difficulty levels opened in its lower, middle and upper sections from the 2024 summer season onward. The combination of valley sections and difficulty levels is more useful for planning than a single distance figure: it draws attention both to how the trails are distributed throughout the valley and to their varying levels of difficulty. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Another hiking option is the mule trail, which is open to hikers and runs from Corte through the Tavignanu Valley. The two valleys offer different starting points for planning outdoor activities: in Restonica, the classification and trails across several sections are relevant; in Tavignanu, it is the specifically named trail from Corte. You can therefore choose based on whether a network of trails across several sections or a mule trail through the valley better suits your interests. Check trail conditions here too before setting out.
