Aregno offers travelers several distinct themes: two churches, protected works of art, the Occi Pieve d’Aregno walking loop and A Fiera di l'Amandulu, a rural, agricultural and craft fair. There is also a coastal view of the village: Plage Aregno is in Algajola; from there, you can enjoy a view of the village of Aregno. For planning purposes, it helps to distinguish between these interests: the churches are associated with architecture and art, while the beach, hiking and fair each offer their own focus.
The Église de la Sainte-Trinité
The Église de la Sainte-Trinité was built toward the end of the 11th century during the Pisan occupation. Since August 11, 1883, the entire building has been classified as a historical monument. The two dates mark different aspects: the late 11th century is when it was built, while August 11, 1883, is when it was classified in its entirety as a protected monument. The granite blocks on the façade are in three colors: beige, green and reddish brown. Inside are two 15th-century frescoes. Thus, an architectural visit takes in both the colorful exterior and the interior frescoes.
Saint-Antoine Abbé: Baroque tower and protected art
The Eglise Paroissiale Saint-Antoine Abbé has a different architectural character: it is a Baroque church in the heart of Aregno. Its tall ochre-colored bell tower has three tiers of arcades, one above another. This arrangement makes the tower a striking architectural feature. The church also houses protected furnishings and works of art, including the painting La Mort de saint François-Xavier and a pulpit. By comparison, the Sainte-Trinité is notable for its construction date, granite colors and frescoes, while Saint-Antoine Abbé stands out for its Baroque tower and protected objects.
Coast and beach access
Plage Aregno is a 1.5-kilometer-long sandy beach in Algajola, with a view of the village of Aregno. The small beach train serves Plage Aregno. Check its timetable before your trip if you plan to use this connection for a visit to the beach. The sandy beach, village view and beach train offer a different focus from the churches, which are centered on architecture and art.
Hiking the Occi Pieve d’Aregno route
Occi Pieve d’Aregno is one of the official hiking loops in Calvi-Balagne. This named loop adds hiking as a distinct theme to your trip planning, while the churches offer a cultural focus. This gives travelers who want to focus on either hiking or sacred architecture two clearly different options.
A Fiera di l'Amandulu
A Fiera di l'Amandulu is a rural, agricultural and craft fair organized by Associu per Aregno. The fair program includes culinary demonstrations. If you would like to include this event, check the current dates and fair program before your trip. Alongside church architecture and hiking, this gives Aregno a culinary and artisanal focus.
