Zévaco offers two distinct ways to plan a trip: historical traces around the village, chapels, and cemetery, and regional cuisine and agricultural products. These can be considered as separate focuses for a stay, combining culture and food. It is also worth distinguishing the village from the municipality: the village is situated on a hillside, while the municipality’s elevation figures span a wider range.
Elevation and orientation
The village of Zévaco lies on a hillside at an elevation of about 700 metres. The municipality stretches from the southwest, on the edge of the Taravo at 300 metres, to the north, near the hamlet of Manganu at 1,300 metres. The figure of about 700 metres therefore refers to the village’s elevation, while the range of 300 to 1,300 metres covers the entire municipal area.
The D 83 departmental road is also a clear reference point for getting your bearings: it is the only road that runs through the municipality.
Chapels, cemetery, and historical traces
The Arca U Campu Santu, a communal tomb dating from the 18th century, is located in the cemetery of Zévaco. It bears witness to a deeply rooted tradition of collective burial in the island’s rural areas, which continued until 1830.
The former chapel of Arca has been restored and has been listed as a Monument historique since 1981. The ruins of a Romanesque chapel dedicated to San Biasgiu also stand on a ridge on the boundary between Corrano and Zévaco. The restored former chapel and the Romanesque ruins thus represent different historical states of preservation.
Every year on 2 February, small loaves are baked and blessed as part of the tradition known as “I panioli di San Biasgiu.” This fixed date sets the custom apart from the location-specific traces of buildings and settlement. If you would like to plan your trip around this tradition, check the date for the year you wish to visit.
The village also contains remains of the chapel of San Gavinu and of an ancient Bronze Age village. The Bronze Age remains thus add an earlier settlement history to the history of the chapels and cemetery.
Agricultural products and cuisine
The Auberge U Taravu in Zévaco serves traditional cuisine made with high-quality agricultural products. The establishment also offers direct sales and tastings of its agricultural products. The connection with regional produce therefore extends from the cuisine to buying and sampling products directly.
The traditional Andreucci farm raises Nustrale pigs and produces farmstead charcuterie with AOP status. The Andreucci family’s chestnut groves provide flour for typical products that can be sampled. Charcuterie and chestnut products thus represent different agricultural products.
Traditional cured meats, honey, and jams can also be sampled in Zévaco. The availability of these tastings may vary by season. If you plan to include regional products in your trip, check what is available during your travel dates.
