Sotta’s character is reflected in its scattered hamlets, granite buildings, historic sites and varied landscapes. Its historic settlement pattern includes hamlets at the foot of the Cagna range and in the Freto plain. Granite buildings continue to shape the area’s landscape and architectural character. This gives you several options when planning your trip: you can explore chapels and archaeological structures, visit memorial sites, or choose a walk focused on the landscape and geology. Consider whether your main interest is architectural history, remembrance or geology.
Hamlets, granite and bread ovens
Most hamlets have old bread ovens. Alongside the chapels and other historic structures, they are a tangible part of the local heritage. When you explore Sotta’s architectural character, it is not only individual monuments but also these smaller traces that help define the hamlets. Together with the granite buildings, they give the historic settlement pattern its distinctive architectural setting.
Chapels and archaeological sites
A notable example is the former Chapel of San-Agostino in Chera. It has been protected as a monument historique since 6 February 1980 and is a Romanesque, single-nave chapel with a semicircular apse. Single-nave means that the building has one main nave; the apse forms its semicircular end. This makes it possible to identify the building’s style, layout and form.
The Bitalza sheepfolds lie on the Cagna plateau and include two chapels. Here, a pastoral building complex stands alongside sacred architecture. The Tappa archaeological site lies on the municipal boundary with Ceccia. It includes a circular torre monument built of dry stone. Unlike Bitalza, Tappa focuses attention on a single archaeological structure; the sites therefore offer different points of interest for visitors interested in local architecture and history.
Two different walking routes
The Borivoli loop is a two-hour hike through the Porto-Vecchio plain. The route from the hamlet of Chera offers a different focus: it invites you to take a geology-focused walk through vegetation growing on unusual terrain, passing granite and sedimentary rock as well as volcanic outcrops. This gives you two distinct considerations when planning: would you like to include a two-hour loop through a plain, or are you mainly interested in the connection between vegetation and geology? These highlights can help you choose a route that suits your interests.
Memorial site and practical planning
The battle fought at the Usciolu Tunnel on 15 September 1943 is regarded as a symbol of local resistance. Each September, a memorial ceremony is held there for the resistance fighters who fell in battle. If you would like to include the ceremony in your travel plans, check the specific date in advance. Sotta is served by the A Berlina intermunicipal bus network. If you plan to use buses for day trips, check the timetable and service details for your travel dates. L’Alivi Chez Féfé in Sotta sells Corsican products; if you have a particular purchase in mind, it is worth checking current availability.
