Basì is considered the most important archaeological site and gave its name to a period of the Corsican Neolithic. Archaeological remains, churches, the Tanchiccia wetland and coastal activities offer different ways to shape your stay in Serra-Di-Ferro: from stone monuments and sacred architecture to nature watching and water sports.

Archaeology and Churches

A Stazzona is a dolmen made of ten stone slabs and a capstone. U Paladinu, above Suara, takes a different form: the statue-menhir is three metres high and weighs more than a tonne. These two very different stone monuments stand alongside Basì’s importance to Corsican prehistory.

The churches also offer different points of interest. In the village of Serra-Di-Ferro, you can visit the Church of Sant’Antonu, which dates from the 19th century. If you plan your visit in advance, check opening times beforehand. The Church of San Marcu in Tassinca was built by the residents of Tassu in 1858 and has been fully restored. San Ghjaseppu has also been restored; its bell tower has three bells.

The parish church of Saint-Antoine abbé stands out for its elongated layout. Its single-nave interior has a barrel vault with lunettes; the choir also has a barrel vault. Architecture enthusiasts will find specific features here that set the church apart from the freestanding stone monuments.

Another historic site is Torre Vecchia, a ruined Genoese watchtower near Castellu, west of Porto Pollo. Before visiting, check access arrangements rather than assuming the route is straightforward.

Tanchiccia and the Coast

The Étang de Tanchiccia is in the municipality of Serra-Di-Ferro. The wetland covers 28 hectares within a sensitive natural area of 80 hectares and is listed as a type 1 ZNIEFF. The reed bed of Tanchiccia extends over approximately 18 hectares and is the largest reed bed in Corse-du-Sud. Since 2016, the Étang has had footpaths, observation points, a viewing tower and a picnic area. Alongside the cultural sites, these offer paths and facilities for nature watching.

Cupabia Beach is considered beautiful and unspoilt and can be reached from Serra-Di-Ferro via the D155. A coastal path leads from the beach to the Genoese tower of Capanella and offers views over Cupabia Bay. As trail conditions can vary, check them before setting out.

Water Sports in Porto Pollo

The Centre nautique de Porto Pollo offers sailing, water skiing and wakeboarding, as well as catamaran and windsurfing lessons. Kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, pedal boats, windsurf boards and motorboats that do not require a licence are available to rent. Check the available activities and seasonal opening before your trip.

Abbartello Kayak Nature offers sea kayaking trips in Porto Pollo at sunrise, during the day and at sunset. These three time slots give you different options for fitting an outing into your day. As this activity is also seasonal, it is advisable to check availability before your trip.

You can enquire about rates and reservations at Jean-Baptiste TOMI Harbour in Porto Pollo. Harbour procedures and contact details may change; checking for the latest information will help you plan accordingly.
