Sartène offers several clear highlights for an exploratory trip: historic lanes, megalithic sites, wine tastings and landscapes overlooking the Gulf of Valinco and stretching as far as the Aiguilles de Bavella. If you’re looking for a hotel in Sartène, you can choose based on whether heritage, wine or the coast will shape your stay.

Old Town and Heritage

Sartène is designated a «Ville d’Art et d’Histoire» (Town of Art and History) and has a rich urban, religious and natural heritage. The town hall is housed in the former palace of the Genoese governors. The Échauguette is the last surviving remnant of the 15th-century town wall. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta is also among the heritage highlights.

The Musée de Préhistoire et d’Archéologie preserves an important collection of statue-menhir stones, notable within Corsican and Mediterranean megalithic culture. The museum is located above Place Porta and offers panoramic views over the Gulf of Valinco. The island archaeology on display spans from the earliest settlements, almost 10,000 years ago, to the end of the Genoese period in the 15th century.

U Catenacciu is a religious procession that passes through the lanes of the old town every Good Friday. It begins at Sainte-Marie Church on Place Porta and follows a two-kilometre route. If you plan to attend the procession, check the dates and local information for that year, as the annual route arrangements may change.

An audio-guided walking tour offers a self-guided route through the historic lanes and takes about an hour and a half. You can allow for this approximate duration when planning; availability and booking details may change. Check the information in advance if you want to include the tour in your plans.

Cauria: Menhirs and Dolmens

The archaeological site of Cauria includes the megalithic alignments of I Stantari and Rinaghju, with upright granite stones, menhirs and statue-menhirs. They bear witness to human settlement at the site since the Neolithic. The site also includes the Dolmen de Funtanaccia, considered the best-preserved dolmen in Corsica.

The different historical periods are easy to distinguish: Cauria points to settlement dating back to the Neolithic, while the former palace of the Genoese governors and the 15th-century town wall illustrate other chapters in Sartène’s history.

Wine Tastings in Sartène

Domaine Saparale welcomes visitors to its tasting room without a reservation and offers tastings of two or three wines. A private tour of the cellars and barrel cellar followed by a tasting is also available by reservation. A private tasting can be accompanied by artisanal Nustrale charcuterie, bread and cheese from the valley. Visitor and tasting arrangements, as well as accompanying food, may change; check what is on offer before your visit.

Domaine Fiumicicoli, on Route de Levie in Sartène, offers wine sales and tastings. Opening arrangements may also change here. The two wineries offer different types of visits: a tasting at Saparale’s tasting room is available without a reservation, while the private cellar tour there requires a reservation. You can take your preferred type of tasting into account when planning.

Coast, Scenery and Nature

The Campomoro–Tizzano coastal trail can be started in Tizzano and passes through Mediterranean landscapes and natural habitats. Check trail conditions before setting off.
