Lʼépine offers a variety of different interests: the architectural history of the Basilique Notre-Dame de l’Épine, Savart de la Folie, an annual music festival and two named routes. When choosing accommodation, you can first decide whether culture, a concert or a route will be the focus of your stay.

The Basilica and its architectural history

The Basilique Notre-Dame de l’Épine was built between 1405 and 1527 to the design of a cathedral and is considered a masterpiece of Flamboyant Gothic architecture. Its construction period, cathedral design and style offer different ways to explore the building. The basilica is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. It also has a rood screen, the only one in the Marne département to have been preserved. The World Heritage inscription recognises the building as cultural heritage; the rood screen is a distinctive architectural feature with a clear regional context. Those making architectural history the focus of their visit can explore both a broad historical period and a specific feature on which to focus their attention.

Music and guided visits

The Festival de musique ancienne et sacrée takes place every year in the Basilique Notre-Dame de l’Épine. If the festival is the reason for your trip, plan your stay around the specific concert dates. An audio-guided visit of the basilica, arranged in eight stages, is also available. Check its availability before travelling. If you would like to combine a concert with the audio-guided visit, include both the festival dates and the visit’s availability in your plans. These two offerings provide different points of reference for a cultural trip: an annual music event and a visit divided into eight stages.

Savart de la Folie: landscape and protection

Savart de la Folie adds a distinct landscape interest to the architectural history. The area covers 63.57 hectares and has been protected under a prefectural decree for the protection of natural habitats since 14 January 2026. Savart de la Folie, in the commune of Lʼépine, is one of the last savarts in Champagne outside the large military camps that are still in use. Its area and protection status define the site’s specific framework; its regional context also makes clear that it holds a special place within Champagne. This means that two distinct interests sit side by side in Lʼépine: the architectural history of the basilica and the landscape of the savart.

Routes for different planning needs

The Sentier des Croix is an easy, 6.0 km circular walking trail with a stated duration of 1 hour and 30 minutes. Its length, difficulty, circular format and stated duration help you assess this route as a measured walk when planning your trip. Route details may be revised, so check the latest information before setting out. The Chemin des Pèlerins runs from the tourist office in Châlons-en-Champagne to Lʼépine; route markers provide guidance. Unlike the circular walk described above, this route is defined by a starting point and a destination. The information about the two routes therefore answers different planning questions: How long is a designated circular route, and how long does it take, or where does a marked route to Lʼépine start?

Choose the focus of your stay

For a cultural trip, the focus may be the basilica, its architectural history or the annual festival; those planning a walk can refer to the information about the Sentier des Croix or the Chemin des Pèlerins. First decide which of these interests matters most for your stay, then choose accommodation to suit the activities you actually plan to do. This makes where you stay part of your travel decision without assuming that every visitor follows the same itinerary or has the same priorities.
