Rochetaillée brings together a landscape shaped by water and a distinctive architectural history: numerous springs and seepage points feed the Tufa Mire of the Combe des Roches, while the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste has been documented since 1140. There is also a precisely defined heritage listing, the history of Domaine de Plongerot, and a château with clearly limited visiting arrangements.

Landscape of Springs and Mire

According to the INPN record dated 11 June 2024, the Combe des Roches in Rochetaillée and Auberive has a cold, humid microclimate. The record notes numerous seepage points and springs there that feed the Tufa Mire of the Combe des Roches. Water is therefore the connecting feature of this landscape: the combination of mire, springs, and a humid microclimate gives the area its character. For travellers interested in wetland landscapes, this is a specific natural highlight.

Another natural area is Marais et pelouses de la Rache et du Vau. It has no developed facilities and can be viewed from the D 6. The two areas offer different features: the Combe des Roches is defined by spring water and tufa mire, while the Marais is distinguished by its undeveloped state and the opportunity to view it from the road. If you are weighing up landscapes as a reason to travel, you can consider these features separately.

Church and Architectural History

Two dates help place the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Rochetaillée in context. The church has been documented since 1140. The two eastern bays of the nave, the side aisles, the bell tower, and the apse date from the 15th century. The early documentation and the dating of these architectural elements therefore represent different historical reference points; not all the elements mentioned belong to the same building phase. On 21 October 1925, the church was entered in the Supplementary Inventory of Historic Monuments, with the nave excluded. The listing therefore does not cover the entire building. For architecture enthusiasts, the documented history, named architectural elements, and dated heritage listing together provide a specific picture, without reducing the church to a single construction date.

History of the Domaine and the Château

The history of Domaine de Plongerot also has two distinct aspects. The Domaine was acquired in 1847 through a collection among local dignitaries. The Frères Ouvriers were among those who administered the Domaine; they trained generations of young farm workers from among the orphans entrusted to their care. The Domaine’s history thus brings together its acquisition and agricultural training: the acquisition describes an event in 1847, while the work of the Frères Ouvriers represents a social and vocational dimension. Anyone interested in history beyond churches will find a different perspective here from architectural history.

Visiting the Château de Rochetaillée is subject to clear restrictions: it is private property and can only be seen from the outside. The château can only be viewed from outside; do not plan an interior visit, and check its access status again before travelling.
