There are several ways to shape a stay in Cusey: buildings with clearly dated histories, a cycling loop and a Natura 2000 site south of the municipality. As you plan your trip, you can choose between local history, cycling and nature. A nearby museum in Dardenay adds a glimpse into a rural school of the 20th century.
Architectural history in a church, chapel and château
Saint-Julien Church in Cusey was built in the first half of the 19th century. Its tower porch was added in 1844. The date therefore marks a later addition, not the period in which the church as a whole was built. This distinction divides the building’s history into two phases: the construction of the church and the later addition of the tower porch.
The history of Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes goes back to an earlier building. The chapel was built on its site; the older building had been constructed in 1731 and destroyed in 1820. These dates refer to the earlier building, not the present-day chapel. Above the chapel is a terrace, which you can reach by one of two stairways that start at the rear.
The Château XVe siècle de Cusey stands on the left bank of the Vingeanne. It consists of eight towers connected by defensive walls. The château is private property and cannot be visited; it can only be viewed from outside. This makes it quite different from the chapel, with its accessible terrace: at the château, the view is limited to the exterior.
Cycling loop and canal structure
The “Autour de Cusey” route is a 22.5-kilometre loop rated easy for cycle touring. It takes cyclists to the Canal entre Champagne et Bourgogne. The details answer different questions: the distance describes the length of the loop, the rating indicates its difficulty, and the canal names a destination along the route. Cycling can therefore be considered as a travel focus in its own right, alongside the buildings.
Another point of interest is the Pont-canal du Badin. This canal structure dates from 1905 and carries the Canal de la Marne Ă la SaĂ´ne over the Badin River. The date places it in time; its function explains how the canal and river meet at this structure. The history of water infrastructure thus adds to that of the church and chapel.
Nature south of Cusey and a museum in Dardenay
The “Pelouses du sud-est haut-marnais” Natura 2000 site comprises two grasslands south of the municipality of Cusey. Their location gives the nature theme a direct connection to the area around the village. Alongside the historic buildings and cycling loop, these landscapes offer another focus to consider when planning a trip.
In nearby Dardenay, the Musée de l'école d'autrefois evokes the atmosphere of a rural school of the 20th century. School desks, notebooks, books and inkwells are part of the experience described, as are activities. Its focus differs from that of the buildings in Cusey: here, the emphasis is on school life and its objects, while there it is on churches, a chapel, a château and a canal structure. You can take these different perspectives into account when planning a themed stay.
