Germont combines a clear focus on wetland conservation with a tangible connection to basketry. The Marais de Germont Natura 2000 site protects several habitat types; a willow grower from the village supplies white willow to a basket maker in the Argonne Ardennaise. Gîte La Belle des Champs is holiday accommodation in Germont.
Wetlands and species protection
The Marais de Germont Natura 2000 site covers municipalities in Autruche, Germont and Harricourt. It protects willow swamp forests, aquatic vegetation in standing freshwater, tall-herb communities and floodplain forest. These technical terms describe different features: aquatic vegetation refers to plant communities in standing freshwater, tall-herb communities to stands of tall-growing herbs, and floodplain forest to woodland in a river floodplain. Together, the list shows several forms of wetland habitat: aquatic plants, herbaceous communities and forest. It is important to note that the protected area is not limited to Germont alone, but also includes municipalities in Autruche and Harricourt.
A nature conservation assessment from 2019 documented breeding or resting sites for the protected European beaver (Castor fiber) within the municipality of Germont. Thus, alongside habitat protection, a specific animal species is also part of the local conservation picture.
Nature events and their different focuses
One specific nature event was a three-hour autumn nature walk offered in 2022 to the Tourbières des sources de la Bar. The approximately five-to-six-kilometre route passed through the Bar peat bogs. The meeting point was in front of Germont town hall; the route started in Harricourt. Duration and route length provide different planning details: the first gives an idea of the time involved, while the second indicates only an approximate distance. Before making plans today, check whether the walk is currently being offered.
In 2022, a volunteer conservation activity involving scrub clearance and pruning was also planned in the same peatland area. This meant two different formats were available side by side: a nature walk with a set duration and a practical conservation work activity. Both activities were therefore connected to the same peatland area, but differed in format.
White willow and basketry
In July 2024, the Ardennes Departmental Council reported that a willow grower from Germont supplied white willow to a basket maker in the Argonne Ardennaise. This links a producer in Germont with a specific craftswoman in the region. The supply relationship adds another aspect to the nature perspective: rather than a protected habitat or an animal species, the focus here is a raw material used in basketry.
