Tanlay combines a significant Renaissance château with a park whose large canal ends at a Renaissance nymphaeum. There is also golf, routes, and activities on the water.

Château, Park and Cultural Heritage

The historic Château de Tanlay is considered one of the outstanding examples of Renaissance architecture in Burgundy. It is part of the Route des Ducs cultural route. The estate includes the château and the Petit Château, the outbuildings, and the Chapelle Saint-Emilian. It also includes the moats and drawbridges, the Cour Verte and its surrounding walls, as well as the park with its canal, vista, bridges, mill, and entrance gate.

The park is laid out around a large canal that ends at a Renaissance nymphaeum. Thus, alongside the château, the estate offers a Renaissance perspective centered on water and landscape design. The château’s interiors can only be visited as part of scheduled guided tours. If you would like to see inside, plan your visit around a suitable tour and check the latest visitor information before travelling.

Golf by the Canal

The public Golf du Château de Tanlay course is located beside the canal in the château park. It has a 9-hole course and a practice area. Antoine d’Ormesson designed the course; the holes run alongside the canal and its vista. Golf is therefore a distinct activity alongside visits to the château and park. If you plan to visit the course, check the latest information about the course and its facilities beforehand.

Routes and Canal Path

Tanlay’s permanent, waymarked Rando-Trail starts in the village. There are two routes to choose from, covering 16 and 29 kilometres. The “Tanlay et son château” route, by contrast, follows the canal towpath to the lock at Moulin de Saint-Vinnemer. The route descriptions offer different points of reference: for the Rando-Trail, choose between two distances starting in the village, while the other route follows the canal to a named lock.

Check local route conditions before setting out. For the “Tanlay et son château” route, also take current information on waymarking and access into account.

Activities at Base de Loisirs l’Haliotis

A municipal gazette reported on the fourth season of Base de Loisirs l’Haliotis and announced that it would reopen in 2026. For boat trips, it gave a duration of one to one and a half hours. In the 2025 season, bicycles and Rosalies were also available, allowing visitors to follow the canal from Tanlay. Before travelling, check whether the base is currently operating and which activities are available.

Information about the château, routes, golf, and leisure activities can help you weigh up different priorities for a stay in Tanlay. A guided tour is required to visit the château’s interior; the Rando-Trail offers a choice of two route lengths. A duration was given for boat trips, while the operation and availability of leisure activities should be checked before travelling. This allows you to plan your stay around the activities that matter most to you.
