Saint-Julien-du-Sault combines listed historic buildings with opportunities to explore traditional crafts, visual arts and outdoor activities. When planning your visit, access is just as important as what you want to see: the interior of the Chapelle de Vauguillain is open only on special occasions, and you should check museum opening hours in advance.
Chapels and history
The Église Saint-Pierre is classified as a historic monument; it was classified in 1840. The Chapelle de la Maladrerie (ancienne) has two dates relating to different facts: its main construction phase was in the 13th century, and it was listed as a historic monument by decree dated 30 October 1925. This distinguishes the construction phase from the later act of protection: the 13th century refers to the building period, and 1925 to the listing. The Chapelle de Vauguillain is a surviving remnant of a 12th-century castle.
Views and visiting conditions
You can reach the Chapelle de Vauguillain via Chapelle Street or through the woods. From there, you can enjoy views of the Yonne Valley, the Yonne River, the woods and the village. The interior is closed to the public, except during special events and European Heritage Days. If you would like to visit the chapel, check in advance whether one of these exceptions applies.
The Musée Ph. Makedonsky displays tools and objects relating to traditional crafts in eight rooms. Its opening periods are listed as July to early September and the European Heritage Days. Before planning your visit, check whether these times are current.
Art classes and exhibitions
Atelier La FenĂŞtre offers visual arts classes, including drawing, painting, monotype and collage. It also offers life-drawing classes for all levels and regularly holds exhibitions. If you would rather make art yourself than visit a sight, the classes offer a different kind of experience. The exhibitions add another art form to the programme.
On foot, by mountain bike or on the river
Outdoor activities vary in format. Marche Nordique Saltusienne offers guided Nordic walking outings with a state-certified instructor. Yonne Vélo advises on a range of routes tailored to different ability levels and preferences, and rents mountain bikes for children and adults. If you would like to rent a bike, check current availability and rental conditions in advance.
For Yonne Kayak, the river is classified as Category 1 under normal conditions and is accessible without technical difficulties. Water levels can change the conditions, so check the current situation before setting out. The options are therefore clearly varied: from guided Nordic walking to route advice and mountain bike rental, as well as a trip on the river.
