Volesvres brings together architectural history and waterways: Château de Cypierre reflects building phases from the 14th, 15th, 16th and 18th centuries, while the Bourbince and the Canal du Centre run through the town. A church dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, a lock site, and opportunities for cycling and walking complete the picture.
Château de Cypierre and its building phases
For travellers interested in architecture and local history, Château de Cypierre offers a tangible point of reference. It was partially protected as a historic monument on 23 December 1985. The partially protected ensemble includes the keep, the main 18th-century building and the 16th-century tower. A 19th-century wing and chapel are also part of it, as are the east staircase and an east tower in the outbuildings.
The building phases thus span several centuries. The date of the main building is not the only factor to consider: the older tower, later additions and individual elements in the outbuildings are also part of the partially protected ensemble. The church in Volesvres adds its own dedication to this cultural perspective: it is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist.
Waterways and the lock site
The Bourbince and the Canal du Centre run through Volesvres. Another locally named site is Lock 22 on the Loire-to-Ocean slope, also known as Volesvres Lock. Its present-day features include a Gauthey-type lock keeper’s house on the left bank, a control cabin in a gable-roofed building based on the 1950s model, and an aqueduct.
This lock site offers a different focus from the château: alongside its historic name, the emphasis here is on specific structures and facilities. A culturally focused stay can therefore explore architectural history and water engineering as distinct themes, without combining them into a single sightseeing route.
Cycling and leafy walking routes
EuroVelo 6 follows a small local road to the RD 301, which leads to Volesvres. This section uses both car-free paths and small roads shared with traffic. This distinction matters when planning a stage: the route should not be assumed to be car-free throughout. If you prefer a particular type of route, check the chosen section and the current route alignment before setting out.
Leafy walking routes offer another way to discover Volesvres. The Aire de pique-nique « Voie Verte » is located on the Voie Verte and offers a shady place to take a break. Alongside cycling information, walks and a specific place to pause are also options to consider when travelling here. When planning, you can give greater emphasis to architectural history, waterways, cycling or a walk, depending on your interests.
