Marked trails, sweeping views and historic buildings define Tramayes. The options range from a footpath lined with intricately carved stone crosses to a circular route that takes you around the village. There are also routes through the countryside and destinations for anyone wishing to make regional views or architectural history the focus of their trip.

Walking and mountain biking trails

The marked “Balades Vertes” trails lead through the local countryside and invite visitors to explore the area’s heritage. One of these trails leads to the Signal de la Mère Boîtier. If you choose a route based on its character, Tramayes offers different options: the Circuit des Sources is a circular walking route that lets you discover the village. La Mère Boitier is a footpath marked by intricately carved stone crosses.

The Tour de Vannas circular route is suitable for both hiking and mountain biking, unlike the routes specifically described as footpaths. The GR76 is locally known as the “Chemin des Moines” and is used by both the Way of St James and the Way of St Francis of Assisi. Check trail conditions before setting out; the different trail names point to a range of planning options, without implying any particular duration.

Panoramas and rural landscapes

The “Balades Vertes” trail network leads to the Signal de la Mère Boîtier. At 758 metres, it is one of the highest points in the Mâconnais. From there, the 360-degree panorama takes in the Alps, the Jura, the Saône plain, and the Monts du Mâconnais, du Charolais and du Beaujolais. The view from the orientation table at the Signal also stretches across the Bresse, the Beaujolais and the Monts du Mâconnais. The path to the table is relatively steep—an important distinction when choosing a viewpoint.

The Tour de Vannas offers a different perspective on the landscape: views of the Grosne Valley and the mountains of the Charolais, Mâconnais and Beaujolais accompany the circular route. It also passes remote farms and pastures where sheep or cattle graze. For a combination of vineyards and views into the Saône Valley, another option is the “À la découverte des paysages viticoles: de Tramayes à Mâcon” route. It runs through vineyards and offers panoramic views of the valley.

The Site de vol libre de Champvent is another named spot with views over the Val Lamartinien. Located on the Massif de la Mère Boitier, it is set up for paragliding. If you plan to fly there, check access and flying conditions beforehand. The viewpoint and the flying site share a name, but planning requires considering not only the panorama but also the conditions for the activity.

Architectural history in Tramayes

The Château de Tramayes is privately owned and has been listed as a historic monument since 14 March 1977. The Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste offers a different perspective on the architectural heritage: it is Romanesque in style and has a tall bell tower protected as a historic monument. Columns and pilasters form a decorative composition.

The church’s building history can also be seen in the parts that have been preserved. It was rebuilt in the 19th century; the bell tower, which now serves as a tower porch, and the former Romanesque choir bay remain. Those interested in architectural styles can view the Romanesque elements alongside the later reconstruction. The château adds to this historical focus, although its private ownership should be taken into account when planning a visit.

When choosing Tramayes as a destination, you can weigh up exploring the village, hiking trails, mountain biking routes, panoramas and architectural history. The routes differ in their mode of travel and scenery; check trail conditions when planning, and, for paragliding, check access and flying conditions.
