Sornay is bordered by the Sâne Morte and Seille rivers. Specific points of interest for a trip include a former branch of the Seille, walks through the Bresse-Bocage, and a heritage orchard with old local varieties.

Riverside Landscape and Village Setting

The Grande Seugnière oxbow lies on the left bank of the Seille opposite the village centre and is a former branch of the river. The hamlet of Lusigny in the commune of Sornay lies directly above the Seille; a screen of trees currently obscures its centre from walkers. Two different points of interest can thus be found by the water: a former river course opposite the centre and a hamlet whose centre cannot be seen clearly from the path.

Walking in the Bresse-Bocage

The 15 km “Randonnée du bocage sornaysien” is a very easy walk through the Bresse-Bocage. Along the route, you can discover some Bresse farms and market-gardening businesses. The distance and difficulty provide a clear outline of the walk, while the farms and businesses offer a glimpse of the surrounding agricultural landscape.

On the SO2 walk, visitors can admire some old Bresse farms with half-timbering. Half-timbering is a specific architectural feature along the route: the farms make Bresse building traditions part of the walking experience. Those interested in rural architecture will find a different focus here from the Randonnée du bocage sornaysien, which is described by distance and difficulty.

Orchard, Events and Market

Inaugurated in October 2015, Sornay’s heritage orchard includes two educational ponds and two insect hotels. It is home to numerous local and old fruit varieties. The different features—the fruit trees, ponds and insect hotels—give the orchard a clear connection to varietal diversity and biodiversity.

Events are regularly held in the orchard in collaboration with the Croqueurs de pommes and the Pépinières de Bresse. If you would like to plan your trip around a specific date, check the current event schedule. Sornay is also a village of market gardeners and horticulturalists. A market is held on Saturday mornings; check the current date before travelling.

Fishing at the Coupures de Sornay

The Coupures de Sornay are a 4 ha former branch of the river in Sornay. Fishing is permitted there for members of the AAPPMA of SaĂ´ne-et-Loire and anglers with a fishing licence bearing one of the CHI, EHGO or URNE vignettes. Current fishing regulations apply. Check the rules before fishing, especially if eligibility is important to your plans.

Château, Chapel and Services

The Château de Lusigny is now a place for meeting, humanist exchange, and reflection and sharing of knowledge and know-how. If you would like to attend a public event, confirm that it is open to visitors before travelling. A chapel stands beside the château; it dates at least partly from the Middle Ages.

For 2026, the municipal website lists services at 11:00 a.m. on the second and fourth Sunday of each month at the Temple Protestant on Route du Temple in Sornay. Check the current schedule before visiting. Alongside the walking routes and natural sites, these specific cultural and religious dates may also help with travel planning.
