A former industrial basin, now used as a marina, tells the story of how the city has changed. On the Canal du Centre, Port du Montceau is a prominent starting point for exploring the area’s industrial history. Other attractions include museums, a factory open to visitors, a cultural centre and opportunities to spend time at Lac du Plessis. You can tailor your stay to suit your interests, whether you’re looking for historic sites, exhibitions, events or activities on the water.

A city shaped by mining

Montceau-les-Mines was officially founded in 1856. The expansion of mining at the time made it necessary to build a city near the mining sites. Traces of this earlier mining activity can be discovered on a walk through the city centre and along the quays of the Canal du Centre. Port du Montceau offers a tangible example of how the area has changed: an industrial port basin has become a marina. The city’s history is reflected both in its origins and in the changing use of a port.

Those interested in the industrial past can explore it from several different angles. Usine Aillot is a visitor attraction housed in an industrial hall built in 1885. Among other things, steam cylinders and road rollers were manufactured there. Usine Aillot is also home to the Galerie du camion ancien, featuring old lorries, buses, engines and equipment from times gone by. The building, its former production and the vehicles on display each offer a distinct focus.

The Manufacture Perrin offers another perspective. Visits are available at this family-run factory, which has been awarded the “Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant” (EPV) label. Socks and tights are made there entirely in France. A visit therefore offers an insight into a specific form of French manufacturing, rather than focusing solely on historic industrial sites. If you’re planning a visit, check the current visiting and booking arrangements in advance.

Museums, exhibitions and cultural events

The Maison d'école houses a school museum with reconstructed classrooms. They trace the history of public education from the 1880s to the 1950s. The subject is brought to life through the rooms and their furnishings. L’Embarcadère offers a different focus: this cultural and convention centre has a varied programme of theatre, dance, music and comedy in a venue with more than 900 seats. As the programme changes, check the latest listings if you’re planning to attend an event.

Le Paléorama focuses on plant and animal fossils found underground in the region. The exhibition is complemented by a life-size reconstruction of a Carboniferous forest made from synthetic resin. Alongside the fossils, it provides a vivid model of this forest environment. The attractions cater to different interests: the school museum explores more recent educational history, while Le Paléorama presents natural finds from the region and a reconstruction of the Earth’s history.

Walks, water and leisure

Lac du Plessis brings together a range of leisure activities. The lake is used for fishing and has a night carp-fishing course. The shores are also popular with walkers, cyclists and joggers. You can choose between spending time by the lake and taking a walk through the city centre or along the canal quays, without needing to combine these different options into a set itinerary.

To help plan your trip, first decide what you’d most like to focus on: industrial buildings and manufacturing, the history of education and the Earth, cultural events or time by the water. The places and activities offer different ways to explore Montceau-les-Mines; they are not intended as a set sightseeing route. For your specific dates, check the relevant visiting and booking arrangements, event listings at L’Embarcadère, and local fishing and access rules at Lac du Plessis.
