Discover Marcigny through its local history, collections and outdoor activities. An easy 1 km walking loop takes you around the town; the museums cover topics ranging from Neanderthal tools to historic carriages, and cyclists can choose from a 23 km route and other signposted options. This lets you plan your stay around your own interests: local history, museum collections or a cycling trip.

Cluniac history on foot and in the collections

The walk “Discover the heritage of Marcigny, a Cluniac site” is an easy 1 km circular route through Marcigny. It starts and ends on Rue de la Tour. Visitors can use information sheets and explanatory panels along the way. Starting and finishing on the same street gives the walk a clear framework.

The Église Saint-Nicolas is predominantly Romanesque and dates from the 12th century. It is one of the last surviving remnants of Marcigny’s Cluniac nuns’ monastery, founded in 1049. Inside, several stained-glass windows from the 19th and 20th centuries commemorate the monastery’s history and its memory. The architecture and windows thus point to different periods in the monastery’s heritage.

The local history collection at the Musée de la Tour du Moulin includes Neanderthal tools discovered in Marcigny in 1989. Other collections focus on mineralogy, archaeology, art and traditions. The tools connect an early archaeological trace with the specific site where they were found, Marcigny; the other collection areas offer further cultural and historical themes.

The Musée de la Voiture à Cheval offers a different perspective on collections. In a Belle Époque setting, it displays 19th-century items, including a berline that belonged to the Comtesse de Ségur and a carriage that transported Tsar Nicholas II of Russia. The historical connections differ: the berline is associated with its former owner, while the carriage is associated with the tsar it transported.

Market, art and changing programmes

The Marché de Marcigny takes place every Monday morning. Its history dates back to an agreement made in 1266 between the Seigneur of Semur and Dom Yves, the prior. If you are planning your visit around the market, check the date in advance, as the weekly schedule may change.

The Centre d'art contemporain Frank Popper regularly presents contemporary art exhibitions. It opens for temporary exhibitions by appointment; arrange your visit in advance.

The Musée de la Tour du Moulin’s annual opening calendar includes workshops for children, families, young people and adults, as well as guided tours, events and free visits. The formats may vary by season. If you would like to plan for one of them, check the relevant calendar in advance.

Cycling routes of different lengths

For cyclists, Circuit A5 is a clearly defined option: this easy cycling route starts in Marcigny and is 23 km long. The FFC-ATB centre in Marcigny has also signposted 25 routes for beginners and experienced cyclists. The information answers different planning questions: for A5, you know the distance, starting point and difficulty of one route; for the centre, the focus is on the number of routes and the experience levels they cater for.

Compared with the 1 km walk, the A5 is much longer and is specifically designed as a cycling route. The two trips can therefore be distinguished by activity and stated distance: a short circular walk on foot or a longer route by bicycle.
