La Tagnière brings together historic buildings, a striking granite formation and a sporty mountain biking option. This lets you choose different focuses for your trip: the history of the village centre and the châteaux, the Romanesque parish church, or the landscapes of the Autunois-Morvan.

A fortified village centre and a Romanesque church

In the Middle Ages, the village centre of La Tagnière was fortified and also served as the administrative centre of the Barony of Uchon. This combination of fortification and administration gives the village’s history a distinctive framework: it is not just about individual historic buildings, but also about the former role of the village centre within the barony. The parish church of Saint-André adds a religious and architectural dimension to this history. It dates from the late 11th or early 12th century and has a Romanesque structure.

If you would like to visit Saint-André, you can obtain a key from the town hall. Check the arrangements locally, as access arrangements may change. This lets you plan your church visit in advance rather than assuming it is open to visitors at all times. The church’s date and Romanesque architecture provide a specific point of interest for anyone interested in La Tagnière’s early architectural history.

Châteaux with different building histories

The Château de Champignolle is thought to have been built in the 17th century on the site of a fortified medieval house. Its garden was designed by landscape architect Edouard André. The château’s façades and roofs were listed as historic monuments in 1976.

The Château de Bussière was built in 1640 on an older feudal motte, whose origins are unclear. A stone bridge crosses the moat surrounding the motte and provides access to the building. The château is partially listed as a historic monument. Unlike Champignolle, its historical interest lies especially in the motte and its uncertain origins. The monument listings also differ: Champignolle’s façades and roofs are specified, while Bussière is listed only in part.

Granite landscapes and mountain biking

La Pierre qui croule offers a different kind of discovery. It is the most unusual rock in a group of spherical granite boulders exposed by erosion. The rock is part of a larger formation; its geological interest lies both in its shapes and in how they were formed by erosion. This sets the granite landscape apart from the buildings and their history.

For a sporting activity, the GTMC variant between Autun and La Tagnière follows pleasant paths through the beautiful landscapes of the Autunois-Morvan. Its sporting character sets the cycling route apart from a visit focused mainly on the church and historic buildings. Check route conditions and difficulty rating before setting off. When planning, you can weigh up your interest in local history against a sporty mountain bike ride, without assuming a particular combination or order.
