Book culture, local history and marked trails are joined in Cuisery by activities on the water. You can get to know the town through its book market and historical panels, or choose a marked route that leads through the Village du Livre to the Seille. When planning your visit, the different themes and schedules of the cultural attractions, as well as the range of river excursions, are especially worth considering.

Books, Markets and Church Art

The Village du Livre brings together 17 book specialists in former shops in the town centre. They include booksellers, antiquarian bookshops, record dealers, book artisans and artists. Literary events and book sales take place there throughout the year. The book market is held on the first Sunday of each month and is open to professionals and the public.

The Église Notre-Dame offers a distinct cultural highlight: the church houses a 16th-century triptych with paintings by Guérard from the Flemish school. Guided tours of the church take place on the first Sunday of each month from March to October. The book market is therefore scheduled monthly throughout the year, while church tours are available only during a limited season. This is worth bearing in mind when choosing your visit date.

Local History and Trails

The historic trail uses 20 panels to present the history of Cuisery, its landmarks and notable figures. It is about 2.2 kilometres long; leaflets are available from the town hall or tourist office. There are also three marked walking loops that take in the town’s built heritage and landscapes.

One of these is the 5.5-kilometre black-marked loop “de la Seille au Tacot”. It passes through the Village du Livre to the Seille, which is designated a Natura 2000 site, then follows the Chemin du Rempart and runs alongside bocage meadows to woodland by the former Chemin du Tacot. The routes therefore have different focuses: the historic trail presents local history through panels, while this longer loop connects the book quarter, river and countryside. The distances provided help you compare the routes; no walking time is given for them.

Nature, Astronomy and River Activities

Visitor information about Centre Eden published in December 2024 describes its museum in Cuisery as a permanent museum experience exploring the diversity and richness of Burgundy’s natural environments. It features live or preserved animals and interactive audiovisual displays. The museum thus combines nature topics with animal exhibits and media.

The Centre Eden astronomy page, also published in December 2024, described a permanent and a mobile planetarium, along with astronomy courses, introductions and activities for anyone interested. Nature and astronomy offer a different focus from local history or the trails. If you want to combine cultural themes with nature, Cuisery offers more than a single walking tour.

On the water, Les Pagaies de la Bresse in Cuisery is another option: the provider rents canoes, kayaks and stand-up paddleboards for various routes on the Seille and Saône. Excursions range from 7 to 39 kilometres and last between 2.5 hours and three days. Advance booking is required. The options therefore range from a shorter outing to multi-day excursions. You can choose between river activities and local trails depending on whether you would rather spend your time on the water, learning about local history or walking marked routes.
