Chiddes offers two distinct ways to explore: the Romanesque church of Saint-Étienne and the three local circular hiking trails. You can plan your visit around either a building with a history of its own or the landscape, discovered through paths and viewpoints. Which aspect you focus on depends on whether cultural history or time outdoors is the main purpose of your stay.
Saint-Étienne and Romanesque architecture
The main construction phase of the church of Saint-Étienne dates to the first quarter of the 12th century. The Romanesque transept, bell tower and apse with a cupola vault date from the first half of the same century. A transept runs across the nave, extending the church space to either side; the apse forms the end of the building. A cupola vault refers to its dome-like ceiling. The Romanesque features therefore relate to different parts of the building, not to a single form.
The main construction phase is more narrowly defined than the dates of the parts mentioned: both periods fall within the first half of the 12th century. Since 2018, the entire church has been protected as a Monument historique. The construction phase describes when it was built, while the protected status covers the whole building and dates from later.
Hiking in Chiddes
There are three local circular hiking trails in Chiddes. Starting from Les Marions, they offer views of the Plessy washhouse and the ponds of Dondin; the Butte de Suin can also be seen in the distance. The views therefore include a building, ponds and a distant panorama—three different sights along the hiking trails. You can also admire the hedgerows surrounding the pastures as you walk the circular routes.
In Chiddes, hiking trails pass through wooded, hilly landscapes, including the GR76 between Suin and Cluny. For orientation, there are two different points of reference: the views from Les Marions on the local circular trails, and the route between Suin and Cluny on the GR76.
Landscape and practical information
The granite terrain and the wooded, gently rolling landscapes provide a broader perspective on hiking than the named viewpoints. They describe the general character of the surroundings, while the washhouse, ponds and distant panorama are specific sights. Together, these details help you understand Chiddes not just through individual destinations, but also through the shape of its landscape.
The car parks at the town hall and the event hall are on the D307, 300 metres from the church of Saint-Étienne. This locates the parking in relation to the church; check local arrangements before travelling.
For a stay focused on culture, a clearly dated church is the main attraction; for hiking, there are several local sights and the GR76 between Suin and Cluny. You can choose to focus on either: architectural history on the one hand, or trails and landscape on the other. This lets you choose Chiddes according to what best suits your travel plans.
