Chevagny-Sur-Guye connects several hiking trails in the village with a distinctive cultural and historical focal point: the Église Saint-Antoine. The village lies in the north-western hills of the Clunisois; forests and meadows edged with hedges shape the landscape and benefit birds. This gives visitors two distinct points of interest when choosing a destination: exploring the hilly landscape and discovering the history of a Romanesque church. If you are looking for accommodation, consider how well this combination of nature and sacred art matches your travel interests.
Hiking trails in the hilly landscape
Several hiking trails pass through the village. A section of the GR®7 also runs from the Col des Vaux in the commune of Verosvres via the Butte de Suin to Chevagny-Sur-Guye, ending at the Église Saint-Antoine. The village trails offer a general hiking option; the GR®7 route has a named starting point, stopover and destination. Before setting out, check the trail markings and conditions.
The announcement dated 14 May 2026 for the Randonnée de l’Ascension listed four routes: 8 km, 13 km, 18 km and a 6 km route suitable for adapted use and pushchairs. The options therefore ranged from 6 to 18 km; the shortest route was the designated pushchair route. These distances applied to that edition; the options may vary in another edition. If the event is relevant to your plans, check the specific details for your visit dates.
Église Saint-Antoine: Building history and stained glass
The Église Saint-Antoine is a Romanesque building that may date back to the 12th century. The original Romanesque nave survives within a floor plan remodelled in the 16th century. This makes it possible to distinguish the older building fabric from the later change to the floor plan. The church was formerly dedicated to Saint Sulpicius; this earlier dedication adds a distinct historical reference to its building history.
The stained-glass windows are also among the church’s notable features. They were recently restored; their condition may change as further conservation work is carried out. Several windows depict unusual iconography, including the multiplication of the loaves and the Communion of the Virgin Mary. The Bessac workshop proposed a series of stained-glass windows for the Église Saint-Antoine, with scenes from the lives of Christ and the Virgin Mary. Those interested in sacred art can thus encounter specific pictorial motifs alongside the proposal for a sequence of windows as distinct aspects.
