Bergesserin can be explored through two distinct cultural traces: the Romanesque Église Saint-Loup and the former sanatorium. There is also a walk around the village, outdoor events, and a commemorative tradition. This lets you consider church art, architectural history, and outdoor activity as different focal points for your stay.

Église Saint-Loup: Architecture and Furnishings

The Romanesque fabric of Église Saint-Loup is particularly striking. The choir, apse, bay beneath the bell tower, and the bell tower itself are protected as Monuments historiques. The decree is dated January 12, 1945. The protection thus covers several clearly identified parts of the church, not just a single work of art.

The furnishings offer another perspective on the church. The carved wooden pulpit dates from the 18th century, during the reign of Louis XV; it was listed as a Monument historique in 1928. The stained-glass windows in the nave depict the life of Saint Lupus, the Bishop of Troyes. Architecture, wood carving, and stained glass create different points of emphasis: the windows tell the story of the saint's life, while the pulpit and architectural features reveal other aspects of the church's furnishings and architectural history.

Sanatorium: Architectural History and Culture

Bergesserin's sanatorium was built in a wooded area. Construction began in 1932; work on the present buildings resumed in 1946. These two dates mark different stages in its architectural history. The complex consists of two groups of buildings arranged at right angles to each other and connected by a reception hall. The ensemble can therefore be viewed as a structured complex linked by a hall, rather than simply as a single building.

The site is also associated with cultural activity today. The Maison de la transmission du geste in Bergesserin currently brings together 18 economic, craft, artistic, or nonprofit organizations across 2,302 square meters. The number of organizations and the occupied area may change. In addition, a 2024 municipal update reports frequent artistic and cultural events outdoors on the sanatorium grounds, as well as events organized by local associations. If you would like to plan your trip around a particular event, check the dates in advance.

A commemorative ceremony is held annually in front of the stele. It recalls the departure of the Commando de Cluny – 4ème Bataillon de Choc from the sanatorium on September 20, 1944. The battalion joined the Première Armée Française and took part in the liberation of France. The ceremony thus connects the specific site with a historic date and the battalion's journey.

Walking and Local Tasting

For a different perspective, the municipality recommends a walk around Bergesserin. It complements the cultural themes with an opportunity to spend time outdoors. The focal points are distinct: the church represents Romanesque architecture and works of art, the sanatorium its architectural history and cultural activity, and the walk time in the area around the village.

La Zouaffe is also connected with the former sanatorium. A local post dated August 20, 2025, located the brewery in its former kitchens and invited visitors to a tasting where they could discover a changing third place. If you would like to include this activity in your plans, ask about current tasting dates. A 2025 product description identified La Zouaffe's beers as Ecocert organic-certified. If the certification matters for your purchase, check its current status.

You can focus on the themes individually rather than combining them into a fixed itinerary: sacred art at Église Saint-Loup, the history and present-day use of the sanatorium grounds, or a walk around Bergesserin. Events and tastings may offer an additional reason to visit, if their dates fit your stay.
