Bellevesvre can be explored through several specific themes: church architecture, the history of markets and the poultry trade, and evidence of mill operations. There is also an official cycling loop that passes through the town. This allows you to consider architectural history, trade and a cycling option with a clearly stated distance as distinct highlights of your stay.

Church architecture spanning several periods

The Église de la Vierge de l’Immaculée Conception was built in 1372. Extensive work beginning in 1868 changed the building; the reconstruction was based on a pointed-arch style inspired by the 13th century. Its architectural history therefore encompasses both its medieval origins and a later, comprehensive redesign.

The church is built mainly of brick. Its bell-tower porch has pointed-arch arcades, and the nave has four bays with ribbed vaulting. A semicircular choir flanked by two chapels adjoins it. The building also has distinctive details: the floor of the bell tower is paved with tombstones, and sturdy buttresses support the structure. Together, these features give a concrete impression of its layout, construction and architectural design.

Fairs and the Halle aux Poulets

Large fairs contributed to Bellevesvre’s prosperity, and its historic location on the border between Franche-Comté and Burgundy played a part. The first mention of a market dates back to the 14th century. This history points to trade as an important part of the town’s past, without implying anything about a present-day market schedule.

The Halle aux Poulets tells a distinct chapter in the history of trade: it was built in the 19th century for the poultry trade. Until the mid-1970s, producers from Bellevesvre and neighbouring communities sold poultry there every Friday to poultry dealers and private individuals. This regular form of selling differed from the large fairs: the focus here was on a specific product, set days of the week, and local and neighbouring producers.

The hall is currently used by local associations for various events, including a fair, flower sale, music festival, Christmas market and flea market. If you plan to travel for one of these events, check the specific dates in advance.

Mill history and cycling

The Moulin d’Or on the Brenne adds a technical aspect to the history of trade. It was first mentioned in writing in 1531, and the mill operated until 1945. It used hydropower and a vertical waterwheel. The dates mark the timeline of its history, while the waterwheel and hydropower describe the technical side of its operation.

Bellevesvre also has a specific connection for cyclists: it lies on the official cycling loop “Découverte de la Bresse du Nord – Circuit n° 1”. The circular route is 43 kilometres long and rated easy. Distance and difficulty are two separate planning details. As route information may change, check the current route before setting off.

The Brenne is a private body of water open for fishing during the 2026 fishing season. If you plan to fish during your stay, check the information for your intended dates in advance.
