In Barnay, a clearly defined cycling tour, cultural and historical themes, and a specific visitor experience centred on snail farming sit side by side. This makes a difference when planning your trip: the “Boucle d’Autun” is a longer ride; L’Escargot Morvandiau offers a visit to a snail farm.
Church, residence and mill history
In Barnay Dessous stands the Eglise Saint Bonnet, an 18th-century parish church. The building is made of dressed stone and comprises a nave and an apse-shaped choir. A large façade and the bell tower rising above it define the exterior. The term “apse-shaped” describes the form of the choir; the nave and choir structure the church interior.
The Château de Vesvrotte is also among the town’s cultural and historical attractions. It is a bourgeois residence dating from between the 17th and 18th centuries. This classification distinguishes the building from a church and provides another reference point for Barnay’s architectural history.
The Étang du Moulin is private. A cadastre from 1828 records two mills below it: “Le Moulin” and “Le Moulin de Roussillon”. This connects the site with a history of milling; the private status of the Étang du Moulin remains important when planning a visit. The granite quarry in Barnay is also private and flooded today.
The Boucle d’Autun with a clear time plan
The “Boucle d’Autun” cycling route passes through Barnay. It is a moderately difficult circular route covering 55.5 kilometres, with a stated duration of six hours. The route is signposted exclusively in an anticlockwise direction; along the way, follow the red cycling markers numbered 2. The distance, stated duration and fixed direction help you estimate how much time you will need before setting off. Check the latest route information before starting, as signs or routes may change.
The Château de Barnay is also among the 31 heritage discoveries listed along the route. It is a historic site, not a preserved visitor attraction. This means you can plan the cycling route as an experience in its own right, without treating the listed heritage site as an accessible château visit.
Snail farming and regional products
L’Escargot Morvandiau offers a visit to a snail farm in Barnay. Check in advance whether visits are available. The products carry the labels “Produits du Parc Naturel Régional du Morvan” and “Morvan Nature et Talents”. Snails born, raised and prepared in Burgundy are sold frozen or in jars; available product formats may change.
Alongside its cultural and historical attractions, Barnay therefore offers a concrete insight into snail farming and its products. This makes for a different travel focus from the six-hour cycling loop: you can plan your time around either a longer ride or a visit connected with regional products.
Getting there and choosing accommodation
The Gare de Barnay is a historic stop on the route from Laroche-Migennes to Étang via Avallon, Saulieu and Autun. The line is still in operation, but Barnay is no longer served. So an active railway line does not mean you can board or alight at Barnay. Before travelling by train, check the latest connections and a station that is actually served.
If you are considering Barnay as a possible overnight stay, you can tailor your search for a holiday rental to your planned stay: will the longer cycling loop be the main focus, or are you mainly interested in the town’s architecture and history and the snail farm visit?
