Azé offers caves, prehistoric heritage and a marked forest trail as distinct highlights to consider when planning your trip. The Grottes d’Azé are in the limestone massif; the Espace Naturel Sensible de la Forêt d’Azé is located above the caves. In addition to guided cave tours, there are themed activities in different formats and a nature discovery trail along the information boards. When looking for a hotel in Azé, consider whether you want guided cave tours, the forest trail or prehistoric themes to be the focus of your stay.

Two caves, two themes

The guided tour of the Grottes d’Azé includes the Grotte de la rivière and the Grotte préhistorique; both are in the limestone massif of Azé. In the Grotte de la rivière, an underground river shaped the rock, and its natural colours are among its distinctive features. The Grotte préhistorique bears witness to one of the earliest human settlements in Saône-et-Loire. The two caves therefore offer different points of interest: one focuses on water and rock, the other on early human settlement. The guided tour has no stairs, but does include a gentle incline.

Interactive and themed tours

During the Visite d’Azélie, participants examine reconstructed prehistoric objects, make a clay medallion and see how sparks are made using a fire-making kit. The interactive format engages several senses: observing, touching, listening and smelling are all part of the experience. The visit thus combines looking at prehistoric objects with hands-on activities and a range of sensory impressions.

The Visite exploration uses a helmet and headlamp to recreate the exploration that began in 1963. The activity is suitable for visitors aged ten and over. It is not caving, and the tour has no particular route difficulties. Compared with Azélie, this visit focuses on equipment and the history of exploration, while Azélie places greater emphasis on sensory experiences and hands-on activities. The seasonal programmes for the themed tours may vary.

Forest trail and nature themes

Above the Grottes d’Azé lies the departmental Espace Naturel Sensible de la Forêt d’Azé. The developed and marked route forms a loop of approximately 1.6 kilometres; allow 45 minutes to an hour. The area is freely accessible all year round. Along the route are stopping points with information boards about fauna and flora. La Chasse aux Trésors Verts introduces visitors to ten natural secrets along these boards using photographs and explanatory text. The loop with its stopping points and the discovery trail therefore offer different ways to explore the area’s nature themes.

What to consider when planning

The forest loop can be considered as a standalone outing, with its approximate distance and duration. The Grottes d’Azé, by contrast, centre on the guided tour and the caves’ different themes. If the Visite d’Azélie or Visite exploration is important to your plans, check in advance whether the seasonal programme is available on your visit date.
