In Varennes-Vauzelles, marked discovery walks and a history closely connected with the railway take centre stage. The Sentier de Lépido is a separate short nature trail in the Domaine de la Beue. When planning your trip, consider the activities that interest you most: the discovery walks cover several distances, while the 800-metre Sentier de Lépido takes 30 minutes to visit and is a shorter option. Other activities include mountain biking, nature experiences at Étang de Niffonds and the Musée de la Résistance. This will help you decide what to focus on during your stay before looking for hotels in Varennes-Vauzelles.

On foot: Circular routes with a range of destinations

Four discovery walks of increasing length have been established in the commune for occasional walkers and more experienced hikers. They are marked in accordance with the standards of the French hiking federation. Information boards are located at the starting points, with signposts along the routes.

The red-marked Boucle de la cité-jardin is 4 kilometres long and leads to the Cité de la Bonne Dame de l’Orme, a testament to urban planning closely linked with the railway. The yellow-marked Boucle de Varennes covers 8 kilometres and loops around the historic town centre. It also goes to Vernuche and to a viewpoint overlooking the Loire plain. At 16 kilometres, the green-marked Boucle des hameaux is a major extension: it passes through outlying hamlets and leads to the Étang de Niffonds and Beue areas, which are used for leisure and nature activities. The routes therefore differ both in length and in their named destinations.

Nature trails in the Beue

The Sentier de Lépido in the Domaine de la Beue follows a boardwalk through alder woodland and reed beds. It is 800 metres long, and a visit is listed as taking 30 minutes. The trail is open year-round and fully accessible to people with reduced mobility. After construction work or exceptional closures, it is advisable to check accessibility again before visiting.

The Sentier de Robin offers a different landscape: it passes through gorse heathland and chalk grasslands characterised by orchids. Those choosing trails by natural environment will find a clear contrast here with the alder and reed habitats of the Sentier de Lépido.

Cité Jardin and the history of the Resistance

The Cité Jardin was built between 1921 and 1930 for employees of the locomotive repair workshops. It comprises 350 houses designed by Georges Hennequin. It is a significant part of working-class urban planning history, one of the largest workers’ housing estates in France and one of the few that are still relatively well preserved. The Cité de la Bonne Dame de l’Orme, reached by the 4-kilometre loop, is also a testament to urban planning linked with the railway.

The Musée de la Résistance de Varennes-Vauzelles covers the Second World War from 1939 to 1945, railway workers’ resistance and remembrance of the victims. The museum offers guided tours adapted to the history curricula for middle and high school students. Alongside the history of the workers’ housing estate, resistance and remembrance are therefore central themes in the area’s cultural life.

Mountain biking and activities at Étang de Niffonds

There are three signposted mountain bike routes around Étang de Niffonds: the yellow-marked Circuit de Varennes, covering 14 kilometres; the blue-marked Circuit du bois de la Brosse, covering 8.5 kilometres; and the red-marked Circuit de la Motte Châtaignier, covering 7.5 kilometres.

The woodland around Étang de Niffonds also has a permanent orienteering course, a CRAPA fitness trail for adults and one for children, as well as a playground. The Sentier d’interprétation – Étang de Niffond starts at the Crapa car park and follows a 2-kilometre loop to the Coulée verte. Information boards and facilities explain the habitats along the route using scientific, historical and cultural information.
