Saint-Pierre-le-Moûtier offers several specific reasons to visit: the Les Éventées windmill, the Église Saint-Pierre and the surviving gateway of the former Benedictine priory, the Chemin des carrières walking trail, and a long-established oil mill. The town’s character thus ranges from architecture and industrial history to landscapes and regional production. When planning your stay, you can choose between a guided mill tour, a walking trail and seasonal activities.

Windmill and architectural heritage

The Les Éventées windmill was originally built in 1861 and renovated between 2003 and 2007. As a tower mill, it has a rotating cap that allows the sails to be turned into the wind. Tours of the mill, lasting about an hour, are available. The tour programme may vary, so check the visiting arrangements before you travel.

The gateway of the former Benedictine priory has also survived. The Église Saint-Pierre has been listed as a historic monument since 1886. Alongside the mill’s technology, these are further tangible traces of the town’s history.

The Chemin des carrières walking trail

The walking trail starts and ends in Saint-Pierre-le-Moûtier. It passes through the lanes of the medieval old town, the green countryside shaped by Charolais cattle, and scenic viewpoints. The combination of historic streets and rural landscapes makes the trail a way to experience different sides of the town in one outing.

Those interested in fishing can find another activity at Étang du Panama, where fishing is possible. Rules and access conditions may change; check the current conditions before your visit.

Oil mill and seasonal produce

The Huilerie Réveillée, also known as Huilerie Léveillé, was founded in 1867 and revived in 2014. Using traditional methods, it produces walnut, hazelnut and toasted rapeseed oils. Demonstrations of the machinery offer an insight into walnut processing; the demonstration programme may vary. The oil mill thus combines its history with a glimpse of artisanal production and a selection of different oils.

At GAEC Verger de Saint-Pierre-le-Moûtier, visitors can pick seasonal fruit themselves: from 1 to 20 June, and in September and October, on Mondays from 2 pm to 6 pm and Wednesdays from 10 am to 6 pm. The farm also sells fruit and processed seasonal products directly on site. A vending machine open around the clock is available there year-round. Check the current picking dates and sales arrangements before travelling.

Road orientation

Saint-Pierre-le-Moûtier is crossed by a road known as the “Route des Vacances” or “Route Bleue” and administratively designated National Route 7. These names refer to the same road through the municipality; travel information may therefore use different names for it.
