Pouilly-sur-Loire can be explored through its wine and river landscapes. The town is the centre of the Pouilly Fumé and Pouilly-sur-Loire appellations; at the same time, the Pavillon du Milieu de Loire in Pouilly-sur-Loire is located in the heart of the Réserve Naturelle du Val de Loire. Wine-growing traditions and environmental education are therefore two specific focuses to consider when planning a trip.

Experience wine-growing in different ways

The Tour du Pouilly Fumé offers a multisensory tour highlighting Pouilly’s wine-growing and the winemakers’ expertise. The Caves de Pouilly sur Loire offer a different perspective: their cooperative wine cellar hosts tastings of Pouilly Fumé, Pouilly-sur-Loire and Coteaux Giennois. Visitors can also meet winemakers in the town and nearby hamlets and tour their wine cellars; availability may vary from one cellar to another.

Each experience has a different focus: the tour explores wine-growing and the work of winemakers, while the tastings feature the three appellations mentioned above. A cellar visit centres on meeting winemakers. This offers different ways to explore the world of wine: through interpretation, tasting or a visit to the cellars.

River landscapes and environmental education

The Pavillon du Milieu de Loire is a visitor centre and a place for environmental education. Its permanent exhibition is dedicated to the Réserve Naturelle du Val de Loire; the pavilion also offers nature events for the general public throughout the year. The exhibition and events are different ways to learn about the protected area. If you are planning to attend a specific event, check its exact date.

The reserve encompasses a diverse river landscape, including numerous river channels, sandbanks, wooded islands, oxbow lakes, ponds and marshes, as well as alluvial forest, dry grassland and meadows. The landscape is therefore not limited to a single type of river environment. Water, wooded areas and open, dry spaces are all among the features described as part of the reserve.

A canoe trip with a set destination

A 21-kilometre canoe trip along the Loire begins south of Pouilly-sur-Loire and ends in Cosne-Cours-sur-Loire. The starting area, distance and destination give the activity a clear framework. It differs from the themed visits to the pavilion and the wine tour: here, the focus is on a river trip over a specified distance.

A historical look at the RN 7

Between 1960 and 1965, Pouilly-sur-Loire was considered one of the first gastronomic stops on the RN 7. During this period, the town had five Michelin-starred restaurants. This episode adds an earlier culinary perspective to the wine and nature themes and is specifically associated with the years 1960 to 1965.
