Poil can be characterised by its architectural history, a striking granite boulder and the August tradition of the Fête de la Treuffe. It also has archaeological traces and a local tradition. When planning your trip, take into account the different conditions at individual sites: the Manoir de Concley cannot be visited, and the access path to the Pierre du Bois Mousseau runs through private woodland.

Saint-Romain Church: Building Phases and Layout

The apse, choir and bell tower of Saint-Romain Church, dating from the 12th century, have been preserved. The chapels built in the 16th century, together with the rest of the building, form a Latin cross layout. This allows two aspects to be considered separately: the dates refer to specific parts of the building, while the cross layout describes the form of the building as a whole. For anyone interested in architectural history, the appeal lies in this interplay between individual building phases and the overall form, rather than in assigning the church a single, blanket date.

Mont Beuvray and the Granite Boulder

Poil lies on the foothills of Mont Beuvray. The Pierre du Bois Mousseau granite boulder is a striking part of the local natural and cultural heritage: it is 5 m long, 3 m wide and 2.50 m high. Its upper surface has basins and cup marks. The measurements convey the size of the boulder; the smaller features on its surface add specific details to this picture. Its description thus gives a sense of both its overall form and its surface features.

Access is important when planning your visit: the path to the Pierre du Bois Mousseau runs through private woodland, and the stone cannot be reached by car. As access conditions may change, check in advance whether access is possible for your visit. Do not plan to drive all the way to the granite boulder.

Other Heritage Sites

The Manoir de Concley in Conclay is an 18th-century château that was remodelled in the 19th century. It cannot be visited. The fortified house of Montantaume is characterised by a motte-and-bailey earthwork, also known as a motte, and the ruins of a tower. Numerous ancient objects have been unearthed at the Quart du Bois archaeological site. These different features include a remodelled château, a fortified site and archaeological finds.

The Statue de la Vierge stands atop a crenellated stone tower in a meadow on elevated ground. According to local tradition, it was intended to protect against thunderstorms. It is important to qualify this as a tradition: this conveys what the statue was believed to do without presenting it as a confirmed historical explanation.

The Fête de la Treuffe and Local Cuisine

Every August, Poil hosts the Fête de la Treuffe. The festival celebrates the potato, which was a staple food in the region for a long time. The programme includes a flea market, a competition for the largest potato and various performances. The festival thus combines a clearly defined time of year with several different events. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the specific dates and programme for the year you have in mind.

At the Auberge de Poil, the cuisine follows the seasons and draws on local producers. It showcases the local terroir through a single set menu. As menus and formats can change, it is advisable to check the current offering before planning a meal there. This way, you can include the local food culture as a distinct part of your trip without assuming that the menu is fixed.
