There are three points of interest to explore when visiting Lanty: the devotional fountain in the village centre, the Romanesque Church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité, and the Les vallons du Morvan walking route from Rémilly to Lanty. The first two offer a focus on cultural history, while the walking route adds an option for hikers. You can decide in advance whether to focus on the buildings and religious landmarks, or to make walking a distinct part of your stay.

Devotional fountain and procession

The Fontaine de la Bonne Dame is a devotional fountain beneath a small vaulted shelter. A statue of the Virgin Mary stands in a blue-painted niche, and a basin collects the spring water. The statue and the collection of spring water give the fountain both a religious and a practical character.

Every year on 15 August, the Feast of the Assumption of Mary, a procession makes its way to the Fontaine de la Bonne Dame. The fountain is therefore not only a place of individual devotion, but also the destination of an annual event held on a fixed public holiday. If you are planning your trip around this date, check the current local schedule in advance.

Romanesque church and historical details

The Church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité is a Romanesque building dating from the 12th century. Its bell dates to 1702, while the altar, made entirely of wood, was designated a Monument historique in 1962. The three dates mark different historical layers: the building’s construction, the bell’s date, and the altar’s later designation. The church can therefore be explored not only through its architectural style, but also through individual historical furnishings.

The bell is 47 centimetres high, has a diameter of 58 centimetres, and is made of bronze and iron. Its bas-reliefs depict Christ on the cross, the Virgin and Child, and Saint Abdon and Saint Sennen. The imagery thus includes both key biblical figures and the two named saints; the details on its materials and measurements also give a precise impression of the object.

Orientation table and walking route

Another distinct place to visit is Lanty’s orientation table: it stands in the town hall courtyard and can be visited free of charge at any time as part of a self-guided visit. This sets it apart from the procession, which takes place on 15 August: the table can be included in your plans independently of this annual event.

The Les vallons du Morvan walking route runs from Rémilly to Lanty and is 13 kilometres long. It includes 258 metres of elevation gain and is rated as moderately difficult. Taken together, the distance, elevation gain and difficulty rating provide a concrete basis for deciding whether this walk suits your stay. Those mainly interested in culture can weigh these details alongside the cultural attractions; those who enjoy walking can consider this clearly quantified route as a second focus.
