The priory of La Charité-sur-Loire is the historic heart of the town, while the Val de Loire National Nature Reserve also extends into the municipality. This brings together different travel interests: cultural history, a pilgrimage route and nature.

Priory and Heritage

The priory was founded in 1059 by the Cluniac Order and forms the historic heart around which La Charité-sur-Loire developed. It is open year-round free of charge. From May to October, opening hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; from November to April, they are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check the seasonal hours before your trip.

Guided tours of the priory and town are offered year-round. These include themed walks through the Loire quarter and the Hôtelleries and Saint-Jacques quarters; individual tour dates may vary. The tours therefore complement a visit to the monastic complex with insights into different parts of the town.

The Cité du Mot develops a cultural project at the priory and in La Charité-sur-Loire, exploring the word in all its forms. It holds the “Centre Culturel de Rencontre” label awarded by the French Ministry of Culture. The Ancien domaine prioral is also part of the area’s historical heritage: some parts are listed as historic monuments, while others are classified as historic monuments.

Notre-Dame Church has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France” since 1998, as part of the Via Lemovicensis route via Vézelay. The Way of St James to Santiago de Compostela also passes through La Charité-sur-Loire; pilgrims can stop here for a rest before continuing to Bourges. The stone bridge to La Charité-sur-Loire was built in 1520.

Loire Nature and Cycling Tours

The Val de Loire National Nature Reserve extends into the municipality of La Charité-sur-Loire. It covers 1,454 hectares along a 19-kilometre river corridor. The reserve offers three educational trails and themed events throughout the year. Individual event dates may vary. Nature enthusiasts therefore have options for planning their stay beyond its cultural attractions.

There are also six signposted cycling routes nearby. They vary in difficulty and length, ranging from 18 to about 30 kilometres. If cycling is important to your travel plans, this range gives you an idea of the tours’ distances. Conditions on the routes may change.

On the River and in Town

The traditional Loire gabarre La Mignonette offers boat trips on the river from La Charité-sur-Loire. Sailing dates and availability may vary, so confirm your preferred date in advance. This makes a river trip easy to include as a separate activity alongside heritage, the pilgrimage route or nature.

La Charité-sur-Loire’s market stalls include, among others, fruit and vegetable sellers, fishmongers, winegrowers, florists, cheesemongers and poultry sellers. The selection may vary depending on the date. This local attraction is also distinct from the priory and nature reserve, and can add another element to your plans.

When choosing a hotel, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: would you like to spend more time at the priory, church and guided tours, or are nature, cycling and a possible boat trip more important? If several interests matter to you, check the priory’s seasonal opening hours and the dates of time-specific activities against your travel dates.
