Dornes combines historic buildings with routes through the bocage landscape. The Church of Saint-Julien and the Château de Dornes reflect different periods of construction; outside, rural routes and views take center stage. When planning, it is worth distinguishing between the types of routes: a circular walk, a scenic route and a long-distance cycling tour each offer a different way to explore the surroundings.

Church, Château and Market Hall

The Church of Saint-Julien was built in the 12th and 16th centuries and has been listed as a Monument historique since 1926. The protected furnishings include three high reliefs, a memorial, a funerary plaque and several statues. High reliefs project prominently from their backgrounds; together with the other protected pieces, they give the furnishings several distinct forms.

The Château de Dornes was built by Florimond Fouet de Dornes in 1547 in the Renaissance style. A loggia with three arches is one of its distinctive architectural features. The château is historically associated with Marshal Lannes and has painted interior decoration. It was partially listed as a Monument historique on April 10, 1996. The protected complex also includes the moats, outbuildings, a fixed bridge and a dovecote.

The covered market hall represents a different period of construction: the architect Cristo built it in 1948 in the Art Deco style. The building was later converted into a function hall. It therefore illustrates not only a particular style but also a change in use.

Routes through the Bocage Landscape

The Chemin de la Brigandiere is a free circular walk with no fixed opening hours. It starts and ends at the Étangs des Baillys and follows rural paths through the bocage landscape of Sologne bourbonnaise. The route also includes damp sunken lanes with old oak trees and wild flora and fauna.

The “Des Lafonds en passant par Bellevue” route offers another perspective, with beautiful views across the landscape. For cyclists, the 553-kilometre, moderately difficult “Tour de la Nièvre à vélo” passes through Dornes. The distance and difficulty rating apply to the entire cycling tour. Numerous connecting routes allow for different itineraries; check route conditions before setting off.

Leisure Spots and Market Visits

Les Bernardins has a children’s playground, an outdoor fitness trail and a football pitch. A footbridge leads to a community-managed orchard beside a pond with high biodiversity. As facilities like these can change, check their current status before visiting.

The Fromagerie Berthier sales van is at the market in Dornes on Wednesday mornings; confirm the schedule before your visit. The Fromagerie’s products include raw-milk cow’s cheese, cream, butter, yogurt, fromage blanc, raw milk and goat’s cheese.
